| Decade In Review | ||
There were a lot of tremendous athletes in the 1990s. We had two or three "best quarterbacks of all time", and the career rushing mark was broken a couple of times. We had an offensive lineman taken first overall in the NFL draft, another year with the top 3 picks being quarterbacks, and we had our first defensive Heisman Trophy winner. There's no "I" in team, but here's the individuals I'd like on my team given the decade to choose from:
Quarterbacks
First Team: Danny Wuerffel, Florida.
His coach called him the greatest quarterback to ever play college football. Arguable, to be sure, but when his backup, Eric Kresser, got to start a game, Kresser threw for 458 yards. That guy had to sit on the bench. Wuerffel set all kinds of SEC records, and a few NCAA marks as well, such as most TD passes by a freshman and career pass efficiency. Efficient is what he was, leading the two highest scoring Florida teams ever (1995 and 1996). He won the Heisman, the National Championship, and a handful of other awards. He could take punishment as well as any pocket passer, understood offense almost as well as his coach, and could throw almost every pass.
Second Team: Charlie Ward, Florida State.
Ditto Charlie Ward. This guy was one of the most decorated college players of all time, also claiming a Heisman and a national title. Not as good a passer as Wuerffel, but smart, fast, and impossible to tackle. Loved the big games and played extremely well in them.
Honorable Mentions: Tommie Frazier, Nebraska; Ty Detmer, BYU; Ryan Leaf, Washington State.
Running Backs
First Team: Ron Dayne, Wisconsin; Ricky Williams, Texas.
Easy choices. Williams set the career NCAA rushing mark in 1998 and Ron Dayne broke the record in 1999. Williams was tremendous at scoring TDs, his career TD mark set in 1998 was also broken in 1999 by Travis Prentice of Miami, Ohio. Dayne was an instant force as a freshman and broke the mold for big, fat backs: that boy could scoot, shaking tackles and juking DBs just as well as he could run them over.
Second Team: Marshall Faulk, San Diego State; Troy Davis, Iowa State.
Honorable Mention: Rashaan Salaam, Colorado; Eddie George, Ohio State; Kijana Carter, Penn State.
Wide Receivers
First Team: Randy Moss, Marshall; Peter Warrick, Florida State.
Two guys who were almost unstoppable. Moss combined amazing speed with an excellent vertical leap, while Warrick had both jaw-dropping juke moves and velcro hands. Both benefitted from outstanding quarterbacks and solid offensive teams, but each player helped to raise his team to a new level. Moss won a I-AA national championship, while Warrick won a I-A title.
Second Team: Troy Edwards, Louisiana Tech; Ike Hilliard, Florida.
Honorable Mentions: Rocket Ishmail, Notre Dame; Michael Westbrook, Colorado; Desmond Howard, Michigan; Jaquez Green, Florida.
Tight End
First Team: James Whalen, Kentucky
James Whalen was such an outstanding tight end that the post-Tim Couch Kentucky offense of Hal Mumme was crafted around him. He was easily the team leader in receiving yards and ranked near the top of all SEC pass-cathing lists.
Second Team: Alonzo Mayes, Oklahoma State.
Honorable Mention: Pete Mitchell, Boston College; David LaFleur, Louisiana State.
Offensive Line
First Team: Chris Samuels, Alabama; Aaron Taylor, Notre Dame; Orlando Pace, Ohio State; Toni Boselli, Southern Cal; Jonathon Ogden, UCLA.
Second Team: Lincoln Kennedy, Washington; Korey Stringer, Ohio State; Aaron Taylor, Nebraska; Flozell Adams, Michigan State; Aaron Gibson, Wisconsin.
Honorable Mentions: Chris McIntosh, Wisconsin; Matt Stinchcomb, Georgia; Chris Naeole, Colorado; Clay Shiver, Florida State; Cosey Coleman, Tennessee.
Place Kicker
First Team: Martin Grammatica, Kansas State.
Grammatica was a true phenom. For two years for the Wildcats, he was virtually automatic, including booming some long distance kicks through the uprights. Arguably the best college kicker of all time.
Second Team: Carlos Huerta, Miami.
Honorable Mention: Scott Sisson, Georgia Tech; Sebastian Janikowski, Florida State.
Defensive Line
First Team: Warren Sapp, Miami; Grant Wistrom, Nebraska; Peter Boulware, Florida State; Jason Peter, Nebraska.
All these guys are big loads. Sapp is the big run-stopper in the middle while Boulware is the speedy sack artist on the outside. Wistrom and Peter are ferocious quarterback hounds as well.
Second Team: Russel Maryland, Miami; Steve Emtman, Washington; John Copeland, Alabama; Dan Wilkinson, Ohio State.
Honorable Mentions: Eric Curry, Alabama; Sam Adams, Texas A&M; Kevin Carter, Florida; Derrick Alexander, Florida State; Reinard Wilson, Florida State; Andre Wadsworth, Florida State; Greg Ellis, North Carolina; Tom Burke, Wisconsin; Corey Moore, Virginia Tech; Corey Simon, Florida State; Michael Myers, Alabama.
Linebackers
First Team: Trev Alberts, Nebraska; Lavar Arrington, Penn State; Derrick Brooks, Florida State.
I shudder to think of the hits these guys can deliver. All three are the opitomy of strength and speed; all excelled at the linebacker's bread and butter: the tackle. Arrington was a force all over the field, whether blocking kicks or getting sacks. Alberts could track anyone down. Brooks was the greatest of the great FSU linebackers of the decade.
Second Team: Jevon Kearse, Florida; Dat Nguyen, Texas A&M; Marvin Jones, Florida State.
Honorable Mention: Levon Kirkland, Clemson; Michael Barrow, Miami; Kevin Hardy, Illinois; Simeon Rice, Illinois; Zack Thomas, Texas Tech; Jarrett Irons, Michigan; Andy Katzenmoyer, Ohio State; Leonard Little, Tennessee; Chris Claiborne, Southern Cal; Mark Simoneau, Kansas State; Sam Cowart, Florida State; Takeo Spikes, Auburn.
Defensive Backs
First Team: Charles Woodson, Michigan; Shawn Springs, Ohio State; Antonio Langham, Alabama; Deon Figures, Colorado.
Woodson broke years of tradition winning the Heisman Trophy as primarily a defensive player. Figures was so good that only a handful of balls were thrown in his direction. Springs was one of the most gifted coverage guys to ever hit the Big Ten. Langham was Deion Sanders-esque in his ability to bait quarterbacks and jump in for the interception at the last minute.
Second Team: Todd Lyght, Notre Dame; Antoine Winfield, Ohio State; Brian Urlacher, New Mexico; Troy Vincent, Wisconsin.
Honorable Mentions: Terrell Buckley, Florida State; Ty Law, Michigan; Aaron Beasley, West Virginia; Dre Bly, North Carolina; Chris McAllister, Arizona; Champ Bailey, Georgia; Tyrone Carter, Minnesota; Deon Grant, Tennessee; Donovin Darius, Syracuse; Anthony Poindexter, Virginia; Lawrence Wright, Florida.
Punter
First Team: Brad Maynard, Ball State.
He kicked it far and he got to kick a lot!
Second Team: Joe Kristosik, UNLV.
Honorable Mentions: Terry Daniel, Auburn; Todd Sauerbrun, West Virginia.
