                           Clash of the Champions

                                  1-21-97

Hey everybody!! This is Deano's 1st Clash of the Champions Report. How
could this night be any more explosive than last nights Nitro. Well, saddle
up children and enjoy the ride. This looks like a wild one. Its still nice
to see that WCW gives us a few FREE Pay-Per-View type evenings a year.
Thank You WCW!!!!

1st match - Dean Malenko vs Ultimo Dragon (Cruiserweight Champion):

If you'll remember last night on Nitro, these two met and The Dragon came
out on the winning end...let's see if it happens again! The crowd started
yelling USA, USA to try to pump up Malenko but The Man of 1000 holds showed
no emotion. The Ultimo Dragon recently lost the 8 other belts that he had
to Jushin "Thunder" Liger, but still retains the WCW Cruiserweight Belt.
Malenko tried to keep the match on the mat, while Dragon used more high
risk and arial moves. Dean seemed to be working on Dragon's leg or ankle to
keep him grounded. At one point Malenko threw Dragon out of the ring and
nailed the left leg on the safety rail. There were several near pinfalls
from both men all match long. Bobby Heenan had the one liner of the night
when Malenko did an off the top rope superplex and Heenan said " Look it's
a DragonFly". Malenko finally wore Dragon down enough to go for the Texas
Cloverleaf but let go when Sonny Ono got up on the ring apron. He let go of
the hold and clobbered Ono to the floor. Dragon got back up and went to
kick Malenko but Malenko caught him and turned it into a Texas Cloverleaf
again. Dragon finally submitted. Your winner...and New, 3 time World
Cruiserweight Champion....Dean Malenko!!

Next match - Mike Enos vs Scotty Riggs:

Enos, much bigger and stronger than Riggs and took charge of the match
early. He was looking for crowd support but they were obviously behind The
American Male, Scotty Riggs. Enos overpowered Riggs most of the match but
in the end, Riggs outsmarted Enos. Riggs nailed Enos with a brutal flying
forearm and got the pin. Riggs by pinfall.

Next was an interview with The Four Horsemen. Ric Flair was not with
them??? Benoit went on about how he's gonna destroy Sullivan. Arn echoed
Benoit's statement and said the Horsemen are back and tougher than ever.
Mongo went to speak and the crowd boo'd him to death. But anyway Mongo also
supported Benoit. Hmmmm? Debra got the microphone after the others had left
and bad mouthed Woman again and Mongo seemed to go right along with her. I
still say the Horsemen are in trouble.

Next match - Konnan, LaParka,& J.L. vs Chavo Guerrero Jr, Super Calo,&Chris
Jericho:

This match was chaos from beginning end. Jericho and J.L. were substitutes
for Psychosis, and Juventud Guerrera. This was probably the most exciting 6
man Tag Match I have ever seen. It was way too difficult to keep up with
who the legal men were but the referree obviously did! At one time all six
men did a high risk move from inside the ring out to the floor on one of
their opponents. Finally two men got back in, Jericho and J.L. Chris
Jericho did the most impressive top rope Frankensteiner ever on J.L.
Jericho gets the pin for his team, and he was an alternate.

Next match - Renegade & Joe Gomez vs Harlem Heat:

The Harlem Heat is a much more experienced team and quite honestly a much
better team! This match didn't last very long. Renegade and Gomez tried to
get some offense mounted but were pretty much unsuccessful. Harlem Heat
took these guys apart. Stevie Ray held Renegade up on his shoulders and
Booker T. came off the top rope with the Heat Seeker dropkick and that was
it. Harlem Heat wins by pinfall.

Next match - Masa Hiro Chono vs Alex Wright:

Nick Patrick was the referree. Chono attacked Wright as he entered the
ring. Alex Wright actually came back and went after Chono and did very
well. Alex Wright had a few pinning possibilities but Patrick gave him a
ridiculously slow count. Wright got so mad the last time that he kicked
Nick Patrick in the lower abdomial area!!! This allowed Chono to re-group
and nail Wright with a wicked kick to the head. This time Nick Patrick did
a normal count. Your winner...Chono by pinfall.

Next match - Scott Norton vs Eddie Guerrero (U.S. Champion):

Norton is twice the size of Guerrero but we have seen Eddie beat some much
larger men than him. Unfortunately for Eddie, Nick Patrick was once again
the referree. Guerrero went immediately after Norton's legs. Norton however
absorbed the punishment and took Guerrero apart. Eddie started to mount a
comeback but Norton nailed Eddie with a shoulder block which drove Eddie
right into Nick Patrick knocking him out of the ring. Then in Sting-like
fashion, Diamond Dallas Page came through the crowd and into the ring and
got Norton with the Diamond Cutter. He then left as suddenly as he came
back up through the crowd. This allowed Eddie to get up to the top rope and
nail Norton with the frog Splash. Nick Patrick had no choice btu to count
to 3 on Norton because he wasn't getting up anytime soon. Eddie Guerrero
wins by pinfall. Did DDP punk Norton because of his contempt for the NWO,
or his desire to get Eddie and the title for himself??????

Next match - Chris Benoit vs Kevin Sullivan:

Falls count anywhere match. Both guys were down at the ring but the fight
started on the floor. They went up through the crowd and made their way to
the bathroom again. Both men just continued to beat the crap out of each
other. I couldn't believe how much punishment these guys could take. They
finally made their way back to the ring. Sullivan got Benoit with the "tree
of woe", and the double stomp and Benoit kicked out!!!!!! Sullivan went to
Jimmy Hart for the megaphone, also distracting the referree and Woman came
in with a chair and nailed Sullivan over the head. Benoit got back up and
pinned Sullivan and was declared winner. Benoit was not finished with the
Taskmaster though, he then went under the ring and got another wooden chair
and hit Sullivan over the head harder than I've ever seen anyone get hit.
Now Benoit seemed to be done.

Next match - The Amazing French Canadians vs The Steiners:

This is the 1st time we've seen Scotty Steiner wrestle in a long time. He
had been out with a bad back injury. (really he had a hip problem from
steroids, so I hear). The Outsiders showed up on the big monitor screen
taunting the Steiners but the Steiners showed no signs of being
intimidated. Rick and Scott came down, untraditionally in all black
leather, ala Sting, instead of their usual Michigan school jackets. The
Steiners immediately went right after the AFC and Scotty showed no sign of
ring rust. The AFC did get the advantage for a little while but the
Steiners looked like they had been wrestling together all along. Scotty
gorilla pressed Rougeau as if to answer any questions about his back and
with ease slammed him down. Just as if we were watching a flashback of the
old Steiners, Rick hoisted up Ouelett and Scott got him with an off the 2nd
rope DDT. Your winners...The Steiner Brothers by pinfall.

Next match - Scott Hall vs Lex Luger:

Hall came down with Nash and Syxx to stand his corner. Remember Lex beat
all three of them together at World War 3. Will we see Sting????
Fortunately Nick Patrick was not the referree. Lex got the early advantage
over Hall but Hall is a good, seasoned wrestler. Luger was thrown out of
the ring and was man-handled by the Nwo on the outside. Luger was obviously
fighting three men. Hall now had Luger where he wanted him. Hall had
several chances to pin Luger but Lex continued to kick out. Hall started to
slap Luger around which did nothing but piss Luger off. Luger got his
second wind and nailed Hall with 5 consecutive atomic drops. Wow! Luger
then worked on Halls back til he thought he was ready to be racked. The
crowd screaming for the rack , Luger gave it to them. Too bad Nash and Syxx
came in before Hall had a chance to submit but Luger did a pretty good job
at holding them all off for awhile. The three eventually ganged up on him.
Just when it looked as if Luger's goose was cooked, help arrived.... The
Steiners came down to Luger's aid! The three of them fared very well
against the members of the NWO. Could this be the beginning of a new era of
WCW dominance???? Luger was declared the winner by DQ.

Steve "Mongo" McMichael d. Jeff Jarrett with Queen Debra US Title Match

Since Jarrett left the Horsemen and Debra left husband McMichael, the
tension between these two former tag team partners has risen to explosive
heights. The veteran Jarrett used his speed and savvy to take an early
advantage, but McMichael's brute strength proved a suitable equalizer.
Despite the US Champ's illegal tactics and interference from the Queen, the
former Chicago Bear exhibited amazing resilience. After Mongo reversed a
Jarrett sleeper attempt, Eddie Guerrero came to the ring while Debra
distracted Randy Anderson. Attempting to clobber McMichael with the belt,
Guerrero accidentally whacked Jarrett and cost him the championship.
Post-match, Debra pleaded with McMichael to take her back. Mongo shoved her
aside.

Raven d. Stevie Richards

Having yet to sign a contract with WCW, Raven demanded a no
disqualification clause before allowing the match to begin. This unexpected
stipulation served him well. Introducing Richards to the arena floor
several times, Raven attempted to finish off his former associate with a
drop toe hold and bulldog onto a metal chair. But Richards also managed to
use the international object to his advantage, reversing a corner toss into
the chair. The turn of momentum allowed Richards a flurry of offense, but
Raven would not be denied in his WCW debut. The disturbed one blocked a
Steviekick and closed out the bout with a DDT.

Alex Wright d. Ultimo Dragon

TV Title Match

Coming off a loss to Chris Jericho this past weekend, Wright needed a
victory and title to join the new team of Jarrett and Guerrero. After
dominating the opening of the match with lightning quickness and thunderous
kicks, Dragon found himself the victim of a double-leg powerbomb and
several vicious suplexes. Despite delirious bouts of techno dancing, Wright
effectively grounded the Dragon for the majority of the match. Dragon made
a late-match comeback with a series of dangerous aerials outside of the
ring, including an off-the-top gourdbuster. His rallying effort, however,
was not enough. After a blinding series of near-falls and counters at the
end of the match, Wright hit his trademark German Suplex with a bridge,
leading to his second WCW title win in nearly as many weeks.

Eddie Guerrero d. Chris Jericho

Cruiserweight Title Match

Another battle in the war between these young superstars, this Clash
match-up marked the first encounter between the two since Guerrero's change
in demeanor. Their conflicting attitudes added a whole new element to the
contest; fusing rage and vehemence with the finest wrestling moves of the
evening. From superplexes to off-the-top frankensteiners, Guerrero and
Jericho wrestled at a breathtaking pace with neither competitor gaining a
solid lead. The Crusierweight champ eventually stole a three count and the
win with a roll-up pin. Post-match, an angry Guerrero attacked Jericho with
kicks, punches, and his devastating frogsplash.

Silver King, Vianno IV and V, and Psicosis d. Hector Garza, Lizmark Jr.,
Juventud Guerrero, and Super Calo

Luche Libre Tag Match

As a result of the recent Luche Libre popularity on TBS's weekend
programming, WCW promoters turned up the stakes by signing an 8-man
contest. The addition of more Luchadors equaled even wilder action between
the rival Mexican wrestlers. After a series of suicide dives highlighted by
Garza's corkscrew plancha and Air Juvy -- Guerrero's ultra-high side splash
--, Psicosis took advantage of the out-of-ring melee by hitting Calo with
his guillotine legdrop in the center of the ring for the pin.

Ric Flair and Curt Hennig d. Syxx and Konnan

WCW's most coveted free agent and the 13-time World Champ proved to be a
far more cohesive team than the Wolfpack pairing of Syxx and K-Dawg. Rarely
losing control of the match, the blondes from Minnesota tagged frequently
and took the fight to the NWO with chops, knee strikes, and superior
wrestling holds. When the Wolfpack members started to turn the momentum by
double-teaming Hennig, Flair ignored the ref's warning, rushing in and
turning the bout into a 4-man fracas. During the free-for-all, Hennig
inadvertently took out his partner by tossing Syxx into Flair's leg. But
Hennig made up for the error by catching K-Dawg in the fisherman's suplex
and getting the pin. Post-match, Okerlund asked Hennig if he was now a
member of the Horsemen. Hennig said "no."

Diamond Dallas Page and Lex Luger d. Scott Hall and Randy Savage with
Elizabeth and Kevin Nash

World Tag Team Title Match

Pre-match, the entire NWO accompanied Hall and Savage to the bout as
black-and-white balloons fell on the walkway. After they entered the ring,
Kevin Nash announced that, in honor of their one-year birthday, Savage
would represent Nash and the bout would be for the World Tag Team belts.
The NWO, with the exception of Nash, headed for the dressing room and the
match began. Early in the bout, Nash was ejected for striking Luger on the
outside. With the odds finally even, the NWO team still managed to get an
advantage on Page. Hall and Savage tagged frequently and worked DDP's
still-injured ribcage. After surviving an intense barrage of attacks in and
out of the ring, Page made a desperation tag to his fresh partner. The
Total Package seemed invincible as he took on both of his competitors at
the same time. Luger applied the Torture Rack to Hall, but, before he could
get a submission, Savage broke the hold. Hall then threw Luger into the
still-exhausted Page. Disoriented and blindsided, Page instinctively hit
Luger with the Diamond Cutter. Hall covered the former World Champ and got
the pin.

Sting and The nWo's Birthday Party

The NWO, led by Eric Bischoff, returned to the ring after their main event
victory over Lex Luger and DDP (see match results). As pamphlets fell from
the sky, Bischoff asked the crowd to wish the New World Order a happy
birthday. The NWO exec repeated his demands for a new show and more perks
for NWO members. But Bischoff's rantings were cut short by the appearance
of Sting in the rafters. As Sting hovered above the crowd with a bird
perched on his hand, the intercom played a child's voice. The voice
explained Sting's mission: he would destroy the NWO for the crimes they had
committed. The lights went out. When they came up again, the same bird was
resting on the ring ropes, leaving the NWO struck speechless.
