Shania gets no respect from CMAA
Shania Twain may want to start singing Aretha Franklin's tune Respect, because she just can't seem to get any from her peers south of the border.
Nominations for the country music industry's most prestigious awards -- the Country Music Association Awards -- were handed out yesterday, and the multi-million-selling Twain came up with only one nod for album of the year.
She is also the only Canadian nominated for the awards that will be handed out Sept. 23 during a show hosted by Vince Gill.
Despite being one of only two females in the best album of the year category for her Come On Over, Twain is not in the running for best female vocalist.
Patty Loveless, the other female up for best CD (Long Stretch of Lonesome), is nominated for best female vocalist along with Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Lee Ann Womack and Trisha Yearwood.
Twain has been credited with having fans flock to the networks airing videos, yet she was snubbed in that category as well. Instead, the CMA chose to honor McBride, Jo Dee Messina, George Strait, Deana Carter and Hill.
What makes her exclusion from this category even more remarkable is that in the second phase of the three-step nomination process, she had three videos in the running -- Don't Be Stupid, Love Gets Me Every Time and You're Still The One.
Twain was also a triple threat for the best song of the year, but came up empty-handed. She was even in the running for entertainer of the year.
Over 6,000 industry workers vote on the awards. The second stage lists all those who received at least 10 nominations on the first ballot.
Alberta's Terri Clark was included in album (How I Feel) and female vocalist on the second ballad but didn't make the final cut to the five with the most votes.
Alan Jackson and LeAnn Rimes were left out in the cold with no nominations.
The traditional-favoring CMA gave Strait five nods, making him the most-nominated performer in CMA history. His 47 CMA nominations surpass Merle Haggard's record of 43.
