XVIII MEMORIAL JUAN VARELA
| A New Era |
The Trofeo de Natacion Memorial Juan Varela was celebrated on april 4th. 1998.
This swim meet is a sports event totally consolidated, and very prestigious in Galicia. The making of this year's edition demonstrates that when there is a group of people determined to work on a project, it can be done no matter how difficult it may seem.
The people that worked on this year's XVIII edition, wanted to expand it and have it recognized nationally. Because of all this a new era has begun, in which, without losing its name, the swim meet increases both its quality and budget, being now the representative swim meet of Ferrol's swimming.
The level of competition is reflected in the meet records (shown below). It is hoped that most of these records are broken in the next edition, and for that the organization counts on the participation of all the teams invited.
All the effort for the planing and seeking of a budget are totally justified if the name of our city and our swim team is known nationally through this sport event.
| Participation Rules |
1-Participation
Each team can present one swimmer per event, and age group. Each swimmer is allowed two swim a maximum of two individual events and one relay.
There will be one relay per age group (one male, one female), which could be formed by swimmers of both age groups.
2-Age Groups
| Sesion and Events |
The swim meet will take place in one day, one morning sesion, and one evening sesion.
The events will be 100 m. Backstroke, 100 m. Breastroke, 100 m. Butterfly, 100 m. Freestyle, 200 m. Individual Medley, y 4 x 100 m. Freestyle relay
| Competition Rules |
The swim meet will consist of prelims morning sesion and finals in the evening sesion for individual events.Each event will have two finals, one for each age group, both for males and females.
Finals will be composed of the six fastest times registered in the morning.
Relays will swim in the morning except the six fastest which will do it at night.

Points will be awarded as follows: 15 points for first; 12 for second; 10 for third; 9 for forth; 8 for fifth; 7 for sixth; down to the twelveth.
Points for relays will be the double than for individual events..
| Awards |
a) There will be a Habra una clasificacion por cada grupo y categoria. Una total masculina y otra femenina, asi como una conjunta total.
b) Se entregara medalla a los tres primeros clasificados en cada grupo y categoria.
c) Se entregara un trofeo a los tres primeros clubs clasificados. El club clasificado en primer lugar llevara el I TROFEO CIUDAD DE FERROL-XVIIIMEMORIAL JUAN VARELA, consistente en una reproduccion en plata del trofeo original. (Si este triunfo fuese el tercero consecutivo o el quinto alterno, se llevaria el trofeo original).
d) Asimismo habra un trofeo para la mejor marca en Tabla Alemana tanto en masculino como en femenino.
e) Se establecen los siguientes premios en metalico:
100.000 pts para el club clasificado en primer lugar, 75.000 pts. al segundo club clasificado, y 50.000 pts. al tercero.
Mejores marcas por Tabla Alemana masculina y femenina, 15.000 pts.
Por batir el record nacional en pruebas individiuales, 25.000 pts.
Por batir mejor marca absoluta del trofeo en pruebas individuales, 10.000 pts.
