Today's League of Wales fixtures

previewed by the Yellow Dragon

The big match in today's League of Wales fixture list is the game between two of Wales's university towns, with Aberystwyth Town entertaining Bangor City at Park Avenue this season. Aberystwyth's slump in form after December saw the sacking of manager Meirion Appleton and his replacement by Barry Powell. Bangor, meanwhile, remain under the management of Lee Williams, despite a relatively unsuccessful season by the high standards of the North Walian club, who've won the League of Wales on two occasions. The corresponding fixture in November saw Aber win 2-1 at Farrar Road. However, a draw seems a likely prospect this afternoon.

Afan Lido will want to do better than when they last played Newtown, with the Port Talbot side wanting to avenge a 4-0 defeat at Latham Park last November. The Lido have done well in recent weeks, and have finally started to pick up points at home, one of their problems all season. Nevertheless, Newtown are a good side, and have to be favourites to take all three points.

Caersws entertain Conwy at the Recreation Ground in a mid-table match. Both sides seem comfortable in their position, and are aware that a consistent run could see them swiftly catch the sides at the top. Conwy won the match at the Morfa earlier in the season, but the two side may share the points today.

Carmarthen Town play Holywell at Richmond Park, and will want to take all three points against the North Walian strugglers. The match at Halkyn Road ended in a 1-1 draw, and was only weeks before the resignation of Carmarthen manager, John Mahoney. His successor, Tomi Morgan, will see this as a match they should win, while his opposite number, Vernon Keep, will also be keen to get the points, and keep his side in the League of Wales. Despite that, the West Walians should come out on top.

Connah's Quay Nomads entertain Caernarfon Town at the Deeside Stadium this afternoon. The return game back at the Oval ended as a 1-1 draw, but Caernarfon will be looking to push for a European place and may not be so content with a single point. The Nomads, meanwhile, are only a few points above the relegation zone, and having had their Welsh Cup hopes dashed will want to earn a few points from their games in hand and move away from the bottom.

At the Recreation Ground in Llansantffraid this afternoon, Inter Cabletel are the visitors to Total Network Solutions, with the Cardiff side looking to continue their highly impressive run in the League of Wales. It was back in December that Inter last lost an LoW game, and with Barry moving closer to the title, they'd like to keep it open until at least the league meeting at the Cardiff Athletic Stadium next week.

Rhayader met Cwmbran last night in a League of Wales match at the Weirglodd, although it will have been difficult for the mid-Walians to repeat their 6-3 victory over the Crows oflast November. Meanwhile, Haverfordwest have an unfixtured weekend as the League of Wales's 17th club.
