Aberystwyth were one of the inaugural members of the League of Wales, as well as being one of the LoW's biggest supporters in its formation. Under the management of Tomi Morgan, the Seasiders finished third in the League's first season, but have yet to repeat that achievement.
Now under the management of Meirion Appleton, Aberystwyth started the 1997-98 season brilliantly, recording home victories over both Caernarfon Town (3-0), and Inter Cabletel (1-0) in the opening week of the season. Gavin Allen was the man causing the damage for the mid-Walian side, scoring twice in the Caernarfon match, as well as scoring the only goal of the game against Inter. After the first week of the season, Aberystwyth fans saw their team on top of the League of Wales.
However, successive draws against Cemaes Ynys Mon and Porthmadog, both of whom were to do well against Aber later in the season, saw them drop places, although a victory over Ebbw Vale gave them some credit. However, a visit to Connah's Quay saw them lose 1-0, although, back at Park Avenue, a Gavin Allen goal was to seal victory over local rivals, Caersws. A home draw with Rhyl was followed by a magnificent performance at Conwy, with a hat-trick from Andy Evans giving Aber a 3-1 victory. This was followed with another home draw, this time against Total Network Solutions, before a comfortable 3-1 away victory at Welshpool Town.
A visit to Cardiff saw Inter Cable-tel get their revenge on Aber, winning 3-0, and spark off a losing streak for the Park Avuenue club. Away at Bangor City, Aberystwyth were defeated 1-0 before turning in bad performances at home to Cemaes Ynys Mon, to whom they lost 5-2, and then away at Porthmadog, where they were defeated 5-3.
That losing streak left Aberystwyth as one of the prime contenders for an upset in the Third round of the Welsh Cup, as they visited CC Sports League side, Porthcawl Town, for a repeat of their quarter-final match last season. With the game at 2-2, and heading for a replay, 3 goals in injury time (2 for Aber, and 1 for Porthcawl) saw a result and Aber in the hat for the fourth round of the competition.
Not so luckily, they traveled to Ebbw Vale for a Gilbert League Cup match, and were defeated 4-2 in Eugene Cross Park. Failing to score in the return leg a fortnight later, Aberystwyth were knocked out of the cup.
However, they had got back to winning ways in the League of Wales, with a 2-1 home victory over Flint Town United. Despite that, they could only draw away at struggling Caernarfon Town, Martin Griffith's left foot getting their goal.
Connah's Quay Nomads did the double over Aber, with a second one-goal victory, but the match in which everyone was interested was the dress-rehearsal for the Welsh Cup fourth round. Aberystwyth perhaps made themselves favourites for that return match, a strong performance defeating Bangor City 3-1 at Park Avenue. Gavin Allen scored twice, with Andy Evans adding the third.
Aberystwyth have also won both matches since then, including a 3-2 victory over Rhayader Town and, last week, a 3-1 home win against Carmarthen in front of a 600+ crowd. Andy Evans scored twice in that match.
Aberystwyth currently lie in tenth place in the League of Wales, with 33 points from 21 games. Gavin Allen has scored 17 goals this season, while Andy Evans has scored 8 in the LoW.
