F.A.W PREMIER CUP GROUP B, TUESDAY, 15th DECEMBER
Following Swansea City's draw with Wrexham earlier this week, Barry became favourites to win Group B of the F.A.W Premier Cup. A week this Tuesday we have the opportunity of cementing that position, when Caernarfon travel from North-West Wales to Jenner Park. >p> It's two months since we last met Caernarfon at Jenner Park, and we won that game 3-0, but as the only other League of Wales club in Group B, the Canaries will see us as prime targets in their bid to regain some pride, despite already finishing bottom of the group.
However, that position belies their fighting efforts at home to both Swansea City and Wrexham. Both English League sides won by a 1-0 goal margin at Caernarfon, and in both cases were lucky to return home with all three points. Swansea had scored through Tony Bird, but Caernarfon had a seemingly legitimate goal from Emrys Williams cancelled. The Wrexham match was similar, with the Robins scoring through Kevin Russell, and Caernarfon firing only inches wide as the game ticked into injury-time.
Even away at the English League clubs, Caernarfon performed respectably. At Swansea, they los 3-0, with two of those goals coming from set-pieces. Back in North Wales, they lost 1-0 at Wrexham, the same score as the Robins defeated us last month.
Caernarfon's credentials are added to by their League of Wales form. They had a poor season last year, and it was only in the final weeks of the season that they avoided relegation. However, this year, they 've started very well and are currently lying in fifth post in the LoW. Indeed, they've only lost two games so far, and one of those was on that last visit to Jenner Park. Other than that, they've performed creditably, with goals coming from many quarters. Emrys Williams has followed in his namesake's fashion, belying his position as central defender. Caernarfon are especially dangerous from corners and other set-pieces, where Williams can be deadly, and he's earnt his side many of their points by being in the right place at the right time. Also with a knack of finding the net are Jason Sadler and Peter Daley, and the Barry defence will be watching them carefully on Tuesday.
It doesn't need to be mentioned that Caernarfon are Eifion Williams's former club, and his erstwhile team-mates will make it difficult for him. Something, which, of course, makes it all the more sweet when Avo is able to break free from his shackles and score, as he did twice in our meeting in September.
The Canaries comfortably made their way past the bananaskin of Cefn Druids in the Welsh Cup, as well as defeating our opponents today, 2-0 last weekend, and they will fancy another taste of cup glory on Tuesday, especially as they've yet to beat Barry!
See you there.
