EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS
Any football fan worth their salt will be waiting with anticipation for tomorrow lunchtime, when the draw for the new groups in the European Championships will be made. The draws will take place in Ghent, Belgium in preparation for the finals in the year 2000, which will be held jointly by Belgium and the Netherlands. For the first time, all 51 UEFA members will be competing, including Andorra and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The qualifying groups will consist of 4 groups of 6 countries and 5 groups of 5. Wales are in pool 4. The qualifiers will be the 9 group winners, a 'best' runner-up, the winners of 4 play-off matches between runners-up, and, of course, the two host nations. The seeds for the competition include the holders, Germany, Spain, Romania, England, Russia, Yugoslavia, Scotland, Italy and Norway.
Let's hope that Bobby Gould and his side can improve on their most recent showing, and also that there's a place for a Barry player or two in that side!
COMING UP!
Next Saturday's home match against Cwmbran will be our last home match for some time, having supposed to have played five this month! Nevertheless, the job of fighting for a third successive League of Wales title and attempting to win the other trophies must be continued, and the club has a few away games to come...
This Tuesday, we play the final match in our F.A.W Invitation Cup group, away at Bangor. The result of this match will determine where we finish in the group. The following week is the return leg of the Gilbert Cup quarter-final with Inter Cabletel. With a 2-1 deficit for Gary and the team to recover, your support at the Athletic Stadium will be more important than ever. After that, there follows several more matches away from Jenner Park, including playing Rhayader Town (31/01), Ebbw Vale (07/02) and Knighton Town in the fourth round of the Welsh Cup (14/02).
For information about travel to away matches, see the Supporters' Club travel notes.
