Barry start season with resounding win and Williams on mark

Cwmbran Town 0 Barry Town 4

CHAMPIONS Barry Town sounded a chilling message to the rest of the League of Wales with an emphatic opening day success.

Unbeaten throughout last season in the league, Gary Barnett's men picked up where they left off and Eifion Williams, scorer of 40 league goals last time round, opened his account with a second half double.

Justin Perry had the first real attempt on goal with a fine header, which Cwmbranc 'keeper, Pat O'Hagan did well to keep out and then Gary Lloyd fired a powerful free-kick over the bar.

Cwmbran were dealt a blow when striker Ian Mitchell was carried off injured and Barry continued to press forward in search of the opener.

The breakthrough came in the 27th minute as Barry's new signing Mark Dempsey cut inside and beat O'Hagan with an angled shot.

Cwmbran almost levelled before the interval when a Phil James shot came back off the bar and was scrambled to safety by the Dragons.

Cwmbran also began the second half strongly but in the 52nd minute were dealt a mortal blow as Barnett and Dempsey carved out the opportunity for Williams to head home.

Barry then took control and stroked the ball around impressively before Williams secured their third in the 76th minute with another header.

Barnett's assistant coach Richard Jones rounded off the scoring six minutes from time.
