South Wales Echo 24th March 1999 - Report by Terry Phillips Mark Dempsey lashed home the winner for title-favourites Barry Town in a cracking League of Wales match at Jenner Park last night.
Barry now need five points maximum - and four would probably be enough on goal difference - from their last six matches to retain the title.
Last night both teams played some outstanding football and there were near misses at both ends, but Barry put a dent in Cwmbran's chase for success and as result put a smile on the face of watching Inter CabelTel boss George Wood. For Cwmbran and Inter are chasing runners-up spot.
It was Cwmbran, though, who had the better chances with Chris Summers hitting the bar and Mark Evans a post.
Barry took the lead after 27 minutes when Richard Jones threw himself forward to head in from close range after good work by Danny Carter and Terry Evans.
Summers equalised from a penalty after Neil O'Brien had been pulled back. but then came that Dempsey winner in a match which was a credit to both teams and the League of Wales.
Eifion Williams, though, did find the net with a superb early header, but
the effort was disallowed for offside.
