Auditor accused of being 'off-ball'

Barry Town Football Club has launched a blistering attack on the District Auditor, accusing her of impartiality and inaccuracy.

The club has sent all Vale of Glamorgan councillors a three-page statement following the auditor's report into it's dealings with the authority.

Barry general manager Chris Aust said: "The gaping holes in the publication leaves us little choice but to state we have no confidence whatsoever in the report and seriously question it's impartiality."

"The issues raised give neither an adequate nor an accurate account of matters. The unsubstantiated and inaccurate statements cannot go unchallenged. On the one hand the district auditor refuses to even consider our requests for assistance and on the other compiles a totally arbitrary report based on one-sided points of view."

The devastating auditor's report said councillors had been kept in the dark over financial dealings with the club, whose commercial manager is former Vale leader Shaun Stringer.

It also pointed out that over the past two years the authority has ploughed more than 500k into Barry Town.

The cost of pitch maintenance has risen by 900% to 50k a year and on a number of occasions work was carried out without charge. But despite all the expense the annual lease charge and licence fee paid by the club has not gone up since 1994.

The district auditor said Barry Town had been asked to fund just 31k for ground improvements. But Mr Aust claims the total amount provided by the club is actually 436,335 UKP. "We totally refute any suggestions relating to the amount we contributed," he added.

The district auditor was not available for comment.
