City Boss - Same Again

by Tony Coates

BANGOR City boss Lee Williams will call for the same again when his side face a team from the other end of the League of Wales table.

Despite losing 4-2 at champions Barry Town last Saturday, Williams praised his players and warned them that they would need the same approach against Rhayader Town at Farrar Road on Saturday.

"We were in control of the game at Jenner Park for forty minutes and then two quick goals took the wind out of our sails after we had created the best chances," reflected Williams.

Williams will choose from strength for Saturday, but warned his players not to underestimate their lowly opponents. Not that they should, because it was Rhayader who ended their Welsh Cup dreams with a shock 3-0 scoreline last November.

"We really want to purge the memory of that result, but Rhayader will make it hard for us. They are greatly improved and managed to take a point off Barry last month," warned Williams.

Tommy Mutton put in Ayorinde early on, but the Nigerian international fired wide from close range and then Robbie Williams set up another opening for Ayorinde, who fired into the side netting with only keeper Dave Wells to beat.

The miss became even more significant when Richard Jones found himself in a similar situation four minutes from the interval and fired across Williams for the opener.

Two minutes later Jones hit his second which owed a lot to a slice of fortune as Lee Williams parried his initial effort, and when the Barry player seized on the loose ball, he just managed to beat the brave attempt by Dave Norman to block on the line.

Jones became the provider five minutes into the second period when he held off Neil Rigby to set up the chance for Danny Carter to tap into the net from close range.

Nine minutes had stood the match on its head, and it didn't seem to be Bangor's day when Barry Thomas headed straight at Wells from a Chris Sharratt free kick.

However, a superb piece of opportunism by Mutton saw the City striker dispossess Barrow at the right of the box and cut in to beat Wells from 15 yards on 56 minutes.

The celebrations had hardly subsided when Rigby's back pass was sliced by Williams for a corner, and when Mark Allen failed to clear Dempsey's flag kick, Gareth Shone rammed home the fourth on 65 minutes.

Williams was almost caught out by a Jones header shortly after, losing his balance as he collected under the angle, but having the presence of mind to throw the ball out as he fell into the net.

Paul Roberts and Mutton set up a difficult chance for Sharratt before Williams needed attention at the other end after colliding with Jody Jenkins.

Wells denied Roberts and Ayorinde in quick succession at the edge of the box as City continued to probe, and when Mutton was fouled by Barry player manager Gary Barnett, up popped Williams to prove he had suffered no lasting effects from his earlier injury by blasting the ball past the bemused Wells from the spot.

Bangor and Caernarfon Town will try and get their Gilbert League Cup semi-final game played at the Oval next Wednesday, March 17.
