Third goalless draw for champions

Afan Lido 0 Barry Town 0

On Tuesday evening, Barry gained their third consecutive goalless away draw and could not score from a dominant first half performance which went woefully mediocre in the second half.

For the first 45 minutes, Lido defended in numbers as if they were away and effectively used an offside trap that continually caught out hard working Richard Jones.

Barry were showing all of their neat controlled soccer on a bumpy pitch but could not turn their dominance into goals.

Missing Andrew York and Eifion Williams, Barry had no cutting edge to their approach play. Lido gained only their fourth home point of the season and Gary Barnett will be hugely disappointed with two points lost.

Paul Mitchell, with a free-kick and a strong drive, brought two excellent saves from goalkeeper Brian Thomas, but that apart, Barry did not look like scoring.

The first half was played at a lively pace and Barry's control was far superior to that of the home side.

Two half chances came Barry's way, Danny Carter flicked his way into the box but his rushed shot went past the post.

A well-worked free-kick by Barnett found Jones on the far post and his header across goal was mis-directed by an out of sorts Justin Perry, returning after suspension.

It was Jones again with great tenacity against a packed defence winning the ball, but only able to toe poke the ball past the post.

As Lido realised that they were in with a chance, their confidence grew and with the defence moving up a couple of yards, their midfield more effectively closed Barry down.

A fantastic save by goalkeeper Dave Wells from a crashing drive and another good save from Paul Mitchell by Thomas, ensured that no goals were forthcoming and the West Walians will be satisfied with four points from Barry.

In turn, Barry have not scored against them in three hours of soccer, a point which will surely concern the management duo. A plus for Barry is only six goals conceded in 12 away games.
