Dragons gain ideal boost for Cup ties

Inter Cabletel 1 Barry Town 2

INTER Cable-Tel needed the points more than Barry, but lacked the urgency required, making their task of qualifying for Europe more difficult.

Barry would have been content with a draw and with the league won, had nothing to really play forexcept to get a confidence booster for the forthcoming cup ties.

Barry had a welcome Saturday off, while Inter dropped another three points, home to Newtown losing 2-0 and Barry, now, are 17 points ahead. The Cardiff sidehave two home games against Bangor and Rhyl, while Barry finish the season with two away trips to Haverfordwest and in-form Aberystwyth.

The champions rested Gary Barnett, Andrew York, David Wells, Mark Dempsey, Danny Carter and Paul Mitchell, with Gary Lloyd out until September.

Loan signings John Jones and Chris Sloan both did well and with Justin Perry, put pressure on the Inter defence, Sloan scored the winner and was probably man of the match with a lively performance.

Barry took time to adjust to the fast playing surface and a couple of defensive scares passed and Inter's goalkeeper Wager was glad to collect a dangerous Lee Barrow long throw-in which troubled the home side.

Jones and Jody Jenkins had on target shots saved by Wager and Barrow was narrowly wide with a set-piece header.

After 21 minutes, Inter got into all kinds of trouble, failing to properly clear their lines, Richard Jones volleyed home and Barry took their lead.

At the other end, Terry Evans was not having his best game of the season and allowed Simon Dyer a shot which he should have put away, but thankfully for Barry he hit over.

Dyer had a hat-trick of chances, but still Inter could not level the score and it remained 1-0 at the break.

It was an eventful first two minutes of the second half but when Evans with a poor clearance allowed Paul Evans a back hell, Dyer gratefully put the ball past John Roberts to make it 1-1.

On 77 minutes, Barry re-took the lead when, from a cross Sloan looked like he was going to power the ball into the net but instead mis-kicked and kicked the ball gently rolled into the corner, completely fooling Wagner.

J Jones hit the post for Barry before Sloan found a break on goal, finding spaceas Inter drove forward, but delayed his shot and was tackled from behind, with only the goalkeeper to beat. Some though it was a penalty, but the referee allowed the game to continue and with no further goals, Barry were delighted to come away with a victory over their rivals.

This Saturday, it's a trip to West Wales where Barry meet Haverfordwest.

On Tuesday, Barry again meet Inter Cable-Tel in the semi-final of the League Cup.
