Life without Gullit began and caretaker
boss Steve Clarke did not get the performance that he might of wanted from
his Newcastle Side.
Clarke recalled Alan Shearers best mate Rob
Lee after Gullit failed to give him a squad number and his Newcastle career
looked like the end.
But it was an ex-Newcastle favorite that was
to steel the show. Former Toon Striker Andy Cole was to slot 4 goals past
the sorry Magpies in front of a packed house at Old Trafford.
Cole opened his account after 14 minutes when
some slack Newcastle defending allowed the ball through for Cole to run
onto and put it past Irish man Tommy Wright who was making his second Newcastle
appearance of the season after signing on loan days before the Tyne &
Wear derby.
It took some nice easy play and some pressure
from Scotsman Duncan Ferguson to get Newcastle back into the game after
30 minutes when Henning Berg put it past his keeper Van Der Gouw |
 |
But Newcastle continued with their poor second
half form when Andy Cole pushed his way past Nikos Dabizas to get his second
of the game. Newcastle fans and Warren Barton protested at the goal and
Nikos Dabizas was sent off for continued arguing with the ref over the goal.
Newcastle never looked like getting back into
the game and never looked like threatening at goal.
Andy Cole was to get two more and Ryan Giggs
got the fifth in the 80th minute.
Newcastle will be looking for big things from
whoever gets the managerial job all the team really needs now is some stability
and only Bobby Robson can do that now.
