This was supposed to be a game of forgetting about what happened the previous Saturday and for Alan Shearer to start scoring goals!

New Signing John Karelse was to make his debut in goal for the magpies. It was win or have plenty of questions to answer for for Ruud Gullit's men and they had to get their brains in gear after 90 minutes to answer some very tricky questions

It was once again a perfect day for strikers with a wet greasy surface after heavy rain fell in the opening minutes of the game. And it was Newcastle that were to have the better of the first half.

Newcastle had more injury problems as after only after 15 minutes Carl Serrant got injured and Silvio Maric once again made another appearance from the substitutes bench.

Newcastle got their passing game together rather well in the early stages of the game but Mark Hughes should have put the home side ahead when he miscued a header wide.

New boy John Karelse was fairly untroubled in the first half but Newcastle got the lead after some quick one two work from Kieron Dyer saw him brought down in the box and Alan Shearer to get his first goal of the season on the 22 minute mark.

Dyer then had a shot deflected wide after some great skill inside the box saw his shot deflected and just wide of the far post. Dyer was a 6 million signing from Division 1 side Ipswich and looks worth every penny of it.

At half time Newcastle looked well on course for their first win of the season with a one goal advantage and a sound defence.

But that was all to change in the second half. Karelse made his first real save of the game with his feet but Kachloul got got Southampton level after 58 minutes when he got onto the end of a cross at the far post.

Young Latvian Pahars got the home side infont after 66 miuntes from only 8 yards when Ripley sent a ball through.

Southamptons third came when a telling cross from Scott Hiley was headed on by Soltvedt and fell sweetly for Kachloul to get his second of the game.

Welsh Veteran Mark hughes added to the missery of the travelling Toon Army when some good work by Soltvedt was met by a trademark volley from Hughes against his former manager Gullit.

Gary Speed got a consolation goal for the Tyneside side but not before Alan Shearer missed a superb opportunity.

It was not a day to remember for the travelling Toon Army as they had a hard and unpleasant journey all the way back to Tyneside to follow as Ruud Gullit had plenty of answers after the game.

The final score was Southampton 4 Newcastle 2 and a well deserved win for the Saints.
