It was going to be this game that was to
set the scene for the month to follow.
Newcastle went to White Hart lane with very
high confidence and that was shown in the early stages of the game.
Franc Dumas was to get his Premiership debut
for the Magpies as Spurs fielded Newcastle old boys Les Ferdinand and David
Ginola.
The early stages were very sloppy with neither
side able to get their passing game going. Kieron Dyer looked very lively
and was keeping David Ginola out of the game.
It was to be Newcastle that were to get the
early lead and their first goal of the season when Alan Shearer flicked
a similar ball that he got sent off for in the Villa game for Nolberto to
run onto and run across the box then triggered a sweetly struck shot in
Ian Walkers bottom right hand corner.
But that was the last time Newcastle really
threatened the Spurs goals A strong Tottenham side tuck control of the rest
of the game.
Norwegian striker Steffan Iversen pulled the
equalizer for Spurs when a sweet corner by Darren Anderton was failed to
be cleared by Gary Speed. |

It was not a night to remember for Newcastle
when former Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand put the home side in front when
he headed home Spurs 2nd of the night.
The second half was much the same old story.
Kieron Dyer faded away as David Ginola and Darren Anderton supplied plenty
of chances for the Totenham front two.
Les Ferdinand who had picked up a knock before
half time was substituted by George Graham for former Birmingham striker
Dominguez. Dominguez took the left wing as Ginola was slotted up front.
Again Newcastle were to concede their third
from a dead ball situation when as another deadly cross from England International
Darren Anderton was this time headed past Harper by captain Tim Sherwood.
Alan Shearer was denied a goal for offside
but Andy Gray's replay showed he was on-side.
After the game Ruud Gullit was criticized
for his remarks that he could not accept that kind of performance from the
team and that it was the fault not his.
George Graham also hinted that Newcastle were
not the side he expected to play.
