Day 6
Braves get back on track
St. Louis -- I thought Monday's win was the biggest of the season. We were down 5-0 and coming off three losses. It was really a gutsy win. There were a lot of happy people around here. I ate at the clubhouse and walked back to the hotel and boy, that was an adventure, signing autographs while trying to dodge cars.
I watched the Olympics on television when I got back to my room and also played Sony Playstation, which I brought along with me for when I get bored. I played a baseball game.
On Tuesday, I wanted to leave for the ballpark early, but I didn't want to be hit with all those autographs again. So I took the elevator down and then took the stairs to the basement and got lost for about 30 minutes. Needless to say, there was no back way out.
I finally got to the park and had two chili dogs. Not healthy, but they were pretty good. Some people ask me why I show up at games so early. Well, first I can get in some extra hitting. Batting practice before the game is not enough and most players will tell you that. Our coaches will throw to us anytime, all you have to do is tell them when you are going to be here and all the stadiums have indoor batting cages.
I also have to get taped. I get both ankles taped for every game and my wrists. Then it takes me some time to get dressed as I wear a lot of layers. I actually like spending time around the clubhouse. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and there are no phones or no one to bug you. Just sit around, have a chili dog, read, play cards, watch television, shoot the bull. It is incredible to think about how much time we waste in the clubhouse.
As far as the team goes on this trip, I think we have turned it around. Not that we have been playing that bad because we did lose three one-run games in Houston. But like I said, this team has a very confident air about itself, no matter if it is spring training, the regular season or October.
