Day 2
Thursday night's win a great way to start
Houston -- Thursday night was a great way to start. It was an intense game and then Freddy (McGriff) whacks that ball into the stands and we win. I get really pumped when we win games late like that.
I went back to the hotel and Ralph Garr Jr. met me and I stayed up until 3 (a.m.) because I can never go straight to sleep after a game. No, I didn't have any room service because I ate after the game in the clubhouse. Talking about food in the clubhouse, it is usually pretty good. There is always plenty here and a big variety. And we tip the clubbie pretty big for feeding us and doing other stuff.
But after the game it takes a couple of hours to wind down. I slept until noon and my phone didn't ring once. Most of the players use other names when they check in so people can't bother us. I always tell my wife and my agent which name I'm using. It's a name with the same initials, like Chris James, something that is very easy to remember. I don't think anybody has ever figured out what I use. It works for everybody.
Ralph came back over Friday afternoon and we went to eat at the Black-Eyed Pea. I love that place. During the offseason, my wife and I alwys go there for fried chicken. Then afterwards I came back to the hotel and jumped in a cab with Eddie (Perez), Pablo (Martinez), (Ed) Giovanola and Mordy (Mike Mordecai). It's not like those guys are huge so we fit in the cab. We got to the Astrodome early so we could take some extra batting practice.
Will I miss not being around for the Olympics? Sure. It's something that the city is really excited about. But I will be able to catch it on television a lot because we spend a lot of time in the hotel room. I won't miss the traffic.
