Day 14
A miscue scored a hit really error
San Diego -- I made a bad mistake Tuesday night. We were down by one run in the eighth and Rickey Henderson hit a ball hard at me that I should have gloved and thrown to first for the out. But it got by me and he eventually scored. I know it was scored a hit, but it should have been an error.
Then to rub salt in the wound, I get up in the ninth and hit a homer. If I make that play, we might still be playing. But that was my fault. When it rains it pours and that is what is happening to this team right now. I was upset after the game and Karin and I just went back to the hotel and had room service.
There wasn't much to do [Wednesday]. I watched some of the Olympics and Karin went and sat out at the pool. Plus, we started packing because we are leaving today for Los Angeles and remember that isn't easy when you are cramming 18 days worth of stuff into two suitcases.
I got out to the park early and took some batting practice. I really like the trade the Padres made for Greg Vaughn. They bumped themselves up with that deal, they are really trying to make a run for it all. They have been looking for a big bat in the middle of their order and they definitely found it in Greg.
But it will likely take some time to get used to the National League and the pitching. I don't think it is an easy transition, but the way that guy hits it won't take long before he is doing the job.
I also have to thank the Georgia Cotton Commission, which sent all the players on the team underwear and T-shirts. I think a lot of the guys in here have run out of underwear.
