Day 13
Got taken for a ride by wayward cab driver
San Diego -- We (with wife Karin) went to the San Diego Zoo on our off day. Everybody says if you come to San Diego you have to go to their zoo.
It was hot and I didn't have walking shoes so I had to wear dress ones and I rubbed blisters on both of my feet.
The coolest thing we saw was the new polar bear exhibit. I had never seen polar bears before. We also watched a couple of brown bears swim around and play with each other.
I saw Grip (Marquis Grissom) there with his family. We stayed about four hours.
For dinner we heard about this place called Avanti's so we decided to go. We jumped in a cab and this guy couldn't find the place. I think he was taking us for a ride, if you know what I mean.
We finally get there about 30 minutes and 40 bucks later. I told him there was no way I was going to pay $40 for that. We almost got in an argument. We settled on $30. But the place looked closed so we just went over to a popular place called the Chart House. I had pepper steak and Karin had scallops.
(Tuesday) morning, we slept late and then went and met Karin's brother for lunch. He flies helicopters at Camp Pendleton.
We really need to play well in a series like this. I realize that we still have a big lead in the division and that's great and all that. But this is a team we might find ourselves going against come October.
Those are the teams you want to beat, take a series from, because you don't want to give them any momentum. In the playoffs they can come back and say, "Well, we beat these guys during the regular season so it shouldn't be a problem now."
I think the day off probably helped everybody. All of us did our own thing. But that's over with now and it's time to get back to playing some ball ... some good ball.
By the way, I rented a car this afternoon. No more cabs rides here.
