Day 12
Having wife on trip means no golf on off day

San Diego -- No, I'm not playing golf on my off day.

The reason? Karin (my wife) is with me and she's the boss. I think we are going to go to the zoo. They have a great zoo in San Diego. This town is a great place. The weather is always super. It doesn't matter what time of year you come here, whether it's in April or July or September. It's always 75 and sunny and there's no humidity.

As far as playing golf Monday like most of the other players are doing, I can't very well just hit the course if she's going to come and travel with me.

I guess what you're asking me is, does she wear the pants in the family?

Yes, she does. I have no problem with saying that. I spend 10 hours at the ballpark every day and she takes care of pretty much everything else, all the stuff with the house and the bills and the bank account. She doesn't work and she does a good job with all that. In fact, we're thinking about moving. We have found something we both really like, but I don't know if we're going to do it yet.

And by the way, the day off came at a good time. We just haven't been playing well. I get frustrated when we don't because I realize how good we can be. I don't really care about the standings. I realize we are way up in the division but we get paid to go out and try to win every game. One of the big things now is how banged up we are. It has never been like this with starting pitching down.

But that doesn't mean that we can't go out there and take a four-game series from the Giants. I'll say this, we really miss David Justice. I'm not taking anything away from Jermaine Dye because I think he is going to be some kind of player for us. But David was a veteran and a big bat in the fifth hole. That is hard to replace. But we're going to have to do it.
