Day 10
Olympic bombing, team's losing skid a real bummer

San Francisco -- It was a great game Friday night, we needed the win badly and Tom [Glavine] pitched his butt off. But when I got back to the hotel, [my wife] Karin opened the door to my room and she was crying. She said "You're not going to believe it, there was a bomb at the Olympic park." I hadn't heard anything yet since I came back to the hotel on the bus and I looked at the television and saw all these lights flashing and everything. I mean just two nights ago, Karin was down at the park watching a concert in that very same spot. It scares you, it makes you mad.

It's embarrassing, some idiot from Georgia goes out and embarrasses all of us in the United States. I just kept watching it on television, I don't think I went to bed until after 2 [a.m.] here. I wanted to go to sleep, but I just couldn't. They kept bringing on more and more people on the television. I just stared at the screen. Atlanta is my home.

As far as the way we're playing, I'm not real happy. There is no excuse for us to be 5-5 on this trip. We should be 7-3. It's depressing. We're having a lot of little problems right now. The offense is not hitting, we're getting down in most of the games and we make a run of them because we never quit. But we're losing. I'm not real happy about the way some of the people are going about their business.

As far as Brad [Woodall] is concerned, he has got some pitches up to players in the middle of the order which you can't do and they have been killing him. I know he can do the job.

I'm not real sure what we're going to do [Saturday night]. San Francisco is a fun town and there are a lot of good places to eat, but the Olympic thing kind of bums you out.
