Welcome to the 80s zone!

Welcome to Scott's collection of 80s miscellaneous stuff of all things cool.

You will find midis of cool 80s new wave, punk and pop songs here and links to other
cool 80s pages as well as info about 80s tv shows and cartoons and toys and, well,
whatever the heck i feel like. okay with you? good, let's dive in. :)

I have, over the last few years, collected a large amount of truly great (and, well, some not so great) songs from the 80s. That is why you won't find ANY Culture Club here. There are tons of good, fun songs from the 80s. A lot of them used keyboards and synthesizers, some overdid it. Did you ever see the video for Gary Neuman's "Cars"? 5 dudes playing keyboards. But it's still a cool song. Well anyway, you have no doubt seen the 80s compilation tapes out there...you know the ones that have some great songs like Stray Cats' "Rock This Town" and the Romantics' "What I Like About You" and then they have 9 more awful songs you never heard of and don't like (such as Culture Club)? Well, the only way to make sure you get all the songs you like is to make the tape yourself.

Thus, I had to make my own compilation tapes. The first 80s tape had a simple name..."The 80s Tape". Easy to remember eh? Then the second had a little more interesting name..."Son of the 80s Tape". The third=Grandson of the 80s Tape, the fourth=Great Grandson of the 80s Tape, and the fifth=Great Great Grandson of the 80s Tape. At least the names aren't boring! Here are the songs on the five 80s Tapes I have recorded:

From the home office in Lafayette, Louisiana...here is tonight's Top Ten list...it's Top Ten groups of the 80s!!

10. Bruce Springsteen - Had one of the biggest records of the 80s with Born In The USA. Sold umpteen million copies. Big hits include: Born in the USA, Cover Me, Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days.

9. Metallica - The mighty Met set a new standard for heavy metal during the 80s. Pre-Metallica metal was a bunch of Ozzy and Zeppelin wannabes. After Metallica, metal was a bunch of Metallica wannabes. "Hits" include: Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Harvester of Sorrow.

8. Journey - Unforgettable rock music from Steve Perry and the band. "Journey's Greatest Hits" is to the 80s what the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack or "Frampton Comes Alive" is to the 70s. Hits: Only the Young, Don't Stop Believin', Separate Ways.

7. Men At Work - The first (and foremost?) band from down under had a HUGE hit in the early 80s called "Down Under". Also: Who Can it be Now, It's A Mistake, Be Good Johnny, Overkill.

6. Blondie - CBGB's in New York in the late 70s was a hotbed of great new wave/punk rock music. The club brought us the Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie and more. Blondiemania ruled during the late 70s/early 80s. Hits include: Call Me, Atomic, One Way or Another, Rapture, and more.

5. Duran Duran - One time, somebody asked a Duran Duran band member why they all married supermodels...he replied "because we can!" This band seemed to have a golden touch. It seemed like every song of theirs was a monster hit. Includes: Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, View to a Kill, Girls on Film, The Reflex and more.

4. Depeche Mode - This group has bridged the gap between 80s New Wave and the modern 90s alternative scene. DM has had over 20 albums since their beginning in 1981. Hits include: Master and Servant, Black Celebration, Strangelove, Everything Counts, Fly on the Windscreen, People are People, Just Can't Get Enough, more.

3. U2 - Group from Ireland also continues to be very popular, but from their roots as a rock band in the early 80s came such classic gems as New Year's Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday. The Joshua Tree, from 1987, was hailed as one of the best records of the decade by Rolling Stone magazine. Other hits include With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, I will Follow, and more.

2. The Police - Usually regarded as the first supergroup of the 80s, Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had some monster hits among their 5 records. Among them was the #1 hit Every Breath You Take, King of Pain, Message in a Bottle, Spirits in the Material World, Synchrinicity, and more.

(honorable mentions the ramones, simple minds, dire straits, huey lewis and the news, inxs)

And now...without further adieu...here is the GROUP OF THE 80S!!

The CLASH!!

The Clash were a punk group from England that started in the mid to late-1970s. They arose out of the deplorable social and political mood there, and such anti-establishment lyrics are apparent in songs like "Guns of Brixton" and "Know Your Rights". The group was composed of lead guitarist and vocatlist Joe Strummer, Topper Headon on drums, Paul Simonon on bass, and Mick Jones on backup guitar and vocals. They were known for destroying instruments during a show a la The Who. The Clash realized that they could energize a young crowd and use their popularity to make positive changes in the world, evidenced in songs like "English Civil War" and "Somebody Got Murdered". Not everything they did was a political statement though. The Clash had a wide variety of music, varied beyond just the punk rock scene of the 70s/80s with such hits as "Train in Vain", "Rudie Can't Fail", "Straight to Hell" and "Rock the Casbah". But this group will always be associated with the angry, loud, fast noise of punk rock as seen in such classics as "London's Burning", "Career Opportunities", "London's Calling", "Cheat" and "Clash City Rockers". The music of The Clash is quite a huge part of the 80s. They are the Godfathers of punk rock. The spirit of angry, social punk is carried on to this day in music by Rancid. The Clash is our group of the 80s! Disagree? Send me an email and expect a heated debate :)
