Well, this wasn't much of a suprise since word had already leaked out the Thursday before the draft that
Couch had agreed to play for the Browns and McNabb did the same with Phily. Akili has the most potential
out of all the quarterbacks, but he is also the most raw. If the Bengals are smart, they will make sure
NOT to rush this guy. The last thing the team needs is a raw talent getting creamed out there and losing
confidence. Expect Jeff Blake to start the first few games, and depending on Smith's knowledge of the
playbook, I expect to see him ready to start week 5 against Tim Couch and the Browns in what should hopefully
be a revived Battle of Ohio (remember Boomer against Bernie?). Smith is strong, he can scramble, and
he has a world of upside. Let's just hope he doesn't turn into the next David Klingler!

Charles Fisher DB 5-11 185 pounds University of West Virginia
Speaking of guys who climbed
up the charts, here's Charles Fisher. Fisher wasn't expected to go until later, but the Bengals needed
a Cornerback and he was the last one left, so they nabbed him. Fisher is fast and physical, but he's
only started one year in college. Look for him to play backup for a while, but he could be a star in
the future. Fisher has a ton of potential, much like Akili Smith.

Cory Hall
Safety 5-11 202 pounds
Fresno State
Corey Hall should not have been drafted
this high. He was a good player at a bad college, and his numbers lie. Hall was at best a fourth or
fifth round pick. Oh well, he does run fast (a 4.4 in the 40). Hall seems to be missing any sort of
instincts, and that can't be taught. Let's hope that Hall grows up over the summer.

Craig Yeast
WR 5-7 165 pounds
University of Kentucky
The Bengals couldn't get Tim
Couch, so they got the next best thing, his wide receiver. Yeast is a very quick receiver, but he's
not that big. He will probably be the fourth string receiver right now, but he will be a kickoff and
punt returner for the team. Yeast may end up starting if Carl Pickens decides to sit out the year, although
I doubt that will happen. Look for Yeast as a deep threat on early downs.

Nick Williams
FB 6-1 270 pounds
Miami (Florida)
This is a big boy. Williams definately
has the size to be a fullback in the league, but he's not much of a runner. The Bengals are used to
this, however, since Brian Milne didn't run the ball much last year either. Williams doesn't have the
hands of Milne, though, so don't look for him to do much with the ball. That's okay, since Williams
is so big and he can block well. He should come in handy on early down passing plays and he is good
at creating holes on running plays.

Kelly Gregg
DT 6-0 302 pounds
Oklahoma
Kelly Gregg has a ton of heart. He plays
hard, in pain, and he gives it 100% on every play. Gregg is great as a leader on a team that is in need
of some discipline. However, Gregg isn't the best player around. He is kinda slow and not too athletic.
Gregg also isn't that strong. Will he be able to overcome these obsticles and become a good defensive
tackle? Only time will tell. Regardless, expect this guy to become a coach 20 years down the line.
|

Tony Coats
OG 6-6 312 pounds
Washington
Coats is a strong player who is fast and
very versitile. He can play any position on the offensive line, and he may end up doing that for the
Bengals. With no depth on the Bengals' line, Coats is great as a replacement for anyone on the line.
|

Scott Covington
QB6-2 220 pounds
Miami (Florida)
Well, the Bengals needed to address
the QB situation in the draft and they did it in the seventh round. Unfortunately for Scott Covington,
they also got this guy named Akili Smith in the first round! Covington is a strong QB who is also mobile
like Smith. However, Covington gets flustered too easily in the pocket, and he will need a few years
before he becomes a true NFL quarterback.
|

Donald Broomfield
DT 6-3 280 pounds
Clemson
Broomfield was one of the last picks
in the draft, and he's ready to prove that he should have gone higher. Broomfield, like most of the
other guys the Bengals drafted, is a project in work. He is a good pass rusher but he needs to work
on his leverage and run defense.
