| June 5, 1998 Will The Patriots Sign A Veteran RB? Part II The Patriots already decided that they will evaluate the rookie and returning RBs and see what area they need help in. If we do need a veteran running back, the type of running back the Patriots will get depends on how well the running backs already on our roster perform. "We'll measure it on how well the backs can learn and pick up their assignments," said Grier. "If they do it well, we'll be OK. If we need to do something later, we'll do it." One of the running backs that the Patriots are considering signing, Terry Kirby, is now an interest of Tampa Bay. As scheduled, RB Erric Pegram worked out for the Patriots Tuesday. No comment was
Team officials have said they will wait until after this week’s mini-camps before making a decision on whether they will sign a veteran. Another reason the team may wait could be running back Ronnie Harmon’s uncertain status with the Chicago Bears. It is possible the Bears may release Harmon, who could be an ideal third-down back for New England. After releasing RB/KR David Meggett, the Patriots have a combined nine running backs and fullbacks on the roster. Rookie RB Robert Edwards will compete with Sedrick Shaw and Derrick Cullors to handle the majority of the rushing chores. The Patriots may be looking for a veteran who can pass protect and add a quality receiver out of the backfield. A big concern the Patriots have is pass protection. Most of the running backs the Patriots have on the roster are inexperienced and they don't seem they can handle the pass blocking responsibilities right away. That is a major factor the Patriots will be concentrating on when choosing a veteran running back, if they do sign one. The rookies will be able to show if they can handle it this week when they practice against the veterans. |
