| June 5, 1998 Rookie Camp A Success. The rookie mini camp ended yesterday, but if you performed up to expectations you earned the right to participate in the mandatory veterans camp today. The rookies were without pads, hitting, and contact. It was difficult for even the coaches and executives to judge the potential of 21 rookie draft picks, rookie free agents, and invited second-year players. "For a bunch of guys running around in shorts and helmets, they did well," said vice president of player personnel Bobby Grier. "It's basically a learning time. Pete [Carroll] threw a lot at them, and I think they're really judged on how well they pick it up." Bobby Grier noticed players looked fatigued the last two days. He did, however, praised Carroll on his organizational skills. Offensive and defensive linemen worked out separately from the other players, mostly on technique and learning the playbook. Out of all the rookies in camp, defensive back Tebucky Jones was the one who was picked on the most. Pete Carroll thought if Tebucky was going to be the starter, he should learn quickly...and he has. Tebucky has impressed the staff and he has performed up to expectations...if not more. "Every day, I think I learned a little more," said Jones. "Being able to cover the receivers without pads is definitely tougher because you have to cover them step for step. Once we put the pads on, I'll be able to use my size to make sure they don't get downfield." Tebucky always seemed confident, which is a great asset. He has a lot of self-confidence when he's on the field. He believes he can perform even better once he gets the pads on. With the probable exceptions of No. 1 pick RB Robert Edwards and DB Jones, the rookies will probably skip camp and work out in the weight room when the veterans report today. |
