Dave Meggett's contract has been terminated...ending a great career with the Patriots.

Meggett's Contract Terminated.

The Patriots announced the termination of star RB Dave Meggett's contract. Dave Meggett underwent foot surgery after he injured it in the first quarter in the playoff loss to Pittsburgh. Meggett was also charged with sexual assault and robbery in an incident during this offseason. His trial was delayed several times and is not scheduled again til a later date.

This move by the Patriots was made for several reasons.

#1 - All NFL teams that realease players by June 1, would only have to pay half the amount of the players salary against their salary cap this year and the other half the next year, instead of having to pay for the full salary the same year.

#2 - Meggett just had sergery on his foot so that would slightly affect his playing ability.

#3 - He is being charged for sexual assault and robbery - something Owner Robert Kraft highly dissaproves of from any of the players.

#4 - Eventhough he's a great player, Dave is getting old. Barring a signing of another veteran this offseason, the Patriots already have 10 RBs in camp! It will likely reach to about 11 or 12 within the next week or so.

Primarily, it was because of reason #1 and #3. The Patriots will miss him, but we have a lot of positives ahead. First of all, Eric Pegram is expected to work out next Tuesday. Rodney Hampton, Greg Hill, Terry Kirby, plus other great veteran RBs are still available.

You know where Dave is headed next, with all the other traitors (or should I say, left-overs)...
The New York Jets.

Other News...

Along with Meggett, WR Vincent Brisby is expected to get cut as well. Brisby was hurt 2 years ago and missed Super Bowl XXXI. He was talked highly of in camp, but we have better players. You may also remmeber Brisby getting yelled at by Drew last season VS Jacksonville for not following his route (while Drew was scrambling to find an open reciever). The Patriots won that game anyway.

The Patriots have a Super Bowl-calliber Recieveing corps with Terry Glenn, Shawn Jefferson, Troy Brown, Brian Stablein (from the Colts), Deitrich Jells, and Tony Simmons (draft pick - 2nd round, 53 overall).
