Anna Kovalyova began gymnastics when she was just 5 years old. She was born in the city of Novgorod in Russia.
Anna's first big hit international competition began in 1994. During this year she won the Russian Junior Title on her first try! Anna also competed successfully in 1995 but 1996 was when a lot of her success began.
In 1996 at the Junior European Championship here team won the gold medal beating top teams such as Romania (who competed poorly) and France and Ukraine. In event finals Anna narrowly missed a medal on her favourite evnt vault - Here she finished 4th. Anna also finished 6th at the Moscow Stars Event amongst rich company!
Later in December Anna won the junior division in the cup of Buratino in her hometown Novgorod.
Since then Kovalyova ( who was too young to compete at the world championships this year) has finished first on floor and vault at the 1997 Stars of the World contest beating the likes of Khorkina & Chussovitina. She also finished 4th at the 1997 Russian Championships qualifying her for worlds if she was of an eligable age!
Anna looks set to be one of the top Russian's heading towards Sydney 2000. Her favourite event is vault and she enjoys tumbling too, she is one of few to perform a double forward somersault on floor!
Coached by Yelena Mashinskaya Anna's favourite gymnast is Svetlana Khorkina. In her spare time she enjoys reading and studying English, and her brother is also on the national gymnastics squad
