The Skater Chibis

About this page...

I figure it's about time I explain this place. ;-)

Still under construction, so forgive the lack of coherancy in places. :-)

About the cartoonist... Me! ^_^
Hi there! My name is Cherryne Edejer, and I am currently a student at York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My first love is drawing, especially cartooning. My most recent interest is figure skating, having gotten hooked after watching the '94 Olympics. Though I have no talent myself (I vow to take lessons someday!), I've come to enjoy the artistry and power in the sport. This webpage is a melding of my two favourite things, drawing and skating, and has come to be the favourite of my webpages (It was also my very first! :-).

How this page got started (or, How the heck did you come up with an idea like this anyways?)
As with most stories, it is a bit involved... It started with a request. I asked a friend of mine, a fabulous (IMHO :-) 'Net cartoonist by the name of Lar DeSousa, to draw me a cartoon. I won't go into the details of the cartoon (but yes, it's skating-related :-). He made a colour printout of it, which he snail-mailed to me. Now, when I received it in the mail, I was surprised to find that along with the cartoon, Lar had sent to me a printout of characters from Ranma 1/2 (a Japanese cartoon I am fond of), drawn in the Japanese super-deformed style. What caught my eye was the one shown here. Something in my head must've clicked (or clunked, it's arguable :-), and I thought it might be fun to draw real skaters in that style. And lo, the Skater Chibis were born... ;-)

Chibis and the '97 CSF in Hamilton
This was the first skating event I ever attended live; I'm mentioning this because this is when I started drawing chibis of other skaters (I began drawing chibis only of Alexei Urmanov, my favourite skater. :-) Also, it was at this event that I gave Alexei a collage of said chibis (which I hoped he enjoyed!). Chibis also figure into one of my favourite personal experience from Hamilton; while sitting in the audiences during one of the practices, a 'Net friend recognized me because she noticed me drawing skater chibis (Hi Eda :-)! It was shortly after '97 CSF that I began this page.

What's to come on this page?
My current goal is to draw chibis of most of the contenders for the '98 Olympics in Nagano (skaters drawn in a Japanese style seems appropriate for this Olympics, don't you think? ;-). I hope I'm doing a good job of it; I've updated this page more in the past couple of weeks than I have in months! Whew! :-) And I think I've almost completed that goal; if I've missed anybody, tell me! But keep in mind, I do need some model to work off of, like photographs; I'm not sure I could draw seldom seen skaters without some sort of model. :-/

As for long term goals, the thing I would most like to improve about this page are the colours; a 16-colour palette just doesn't cut it these days. :-P But until my university gets a better paint program, I'm afraid you'll just have to put up with it. :-/ Also, you might've noticed I've long advertised animated GIFs; I don't personally have the resources, though I know someone who does. I'll get that done... One of these days. ;-)
