Eric Cantona beat a hasty retreat from Old Trafford last night, his dream of
European Cup glory severely dented as Manchester United's invincible record on home soil came to a
dramatic end.

United were unbeaten against Continental opponents visiting these shores for
40 years, covering 56 matches, until Turkish champions Fenerbahce won 1-0 in
the Champions League last night through Elvir Bolic's deflected goal.

Skipper Cantona was whisked off in a car by three friends within 18 minutes
of the final whistle. The Frenchman, who regards lifting the European Cup as the major ambition of his
career, was clearly an unhappy man.

After defeating Fenerbahce 2-0 in Istanbul two weeks ago, United needed a
repeat performance to clinch their pas sage into the quarter-finals of the 
European Cup. Instead, they find themselves still needing four points from 
their final two games - against Juventus at Old Trafford next month and 
against Rapid Vienna in Austria in December.

Manager Alex Ferguson said: 'It's a night we'll never forget, not just
because of losing the record but because we were one step from the last eight.

'We're still two points clear of Fenerbahce and they have to go to Turin to
take on Juventus in their last game.'
