In a tight game which both teams needed to win to stand any real chance of progressing to the last eight, Danish defender Jes Hogh gave the Turks a ray of hope with an opportunist goal in the 75th minute. Brazilian manager Sebastiao Lazaroni was phlegmatic about Fenerbahce's chances of qualifying. "The quarter-finals are still something of a dream for us but we will give it a try," he said. The Turks must beat holders Juventus away in the last game of the group to be sure of finishing in second place ahead of Manchester United. Fenerbahce were denied the lead in the first half by a number of fine saves by goalkeeper Michael Konsel. By contrast, Rapid forced only one save from the goalkeeper Rustu Recber, early in the first half. The Istanbul team increased the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with Hogh's goal. Fenerbahce's Nigerian defender Uche Okechukwu shot against the bar. The rebound landed in front of Hogh, who headed home from close range.
