Fenerbahce beats Manchester United to end 40-year record

MANCHESTER, England (Oct 30, 1996 - 17:24 EST) - Turkey's Fenerbahce ended
Manchester United's 40-year unbeaten home record in European competition when they beat the English
champions 1-0 in their a Champions' League Group C match on Wednesday.

The Turkish side withstood intense second-half pressure from United and then
scored against the run of play through Elvir Bolic.

Bolic broke down the left side in the 76th minute. His shot deflected off
defender David May and looped over goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel into the net.

Alex Ferguson's side, Schmeichel included, poured forward in search of an
equaliser but the Turks held on to claim a
historic victory.
