MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings got the first of their four free-agent running backs signed when Leroy Hoard signed a two-year contract.
Hoard helped revive the Vikings' running game late in the season after Robert Smith went down with a season-ending knee injury.
Hoard signed with Minnesota on Nov. 5, eight days after Smith's injury. He had been cut by Baltimore and Carolina earlier in the season. The Ravens released him when Bam Morris was signed, while the Panthers released him after Anthony Johnson emerged as the top back following an injury to Tim Biakabatuka.
Hoard contributed immediately, gaining 108 yards in a victory over Oakland. He rushed for 420 yards and three touchdowns in the final six games.
"It's good to have Leroy back with us," said Vikings vice president Jeff Diamond. "He did some good things for us."
In addition to Hoard, Amp Lee, Scottie Graham and Smith are all free agents. The Vikings hope to re-sign Smith, who was leading the NFL in rushing at the time of his injury.
"We'd still like to get Robert done and have Robert and Leroy as a 1-2 punch," said Diamond.
