The inaugural ISL League champions, winning the league last year in their tenth season, and what a way to celebrate! In their eleven year history, they have become the most successful team in British hockey. In the past couple of years, it has been Sheffield who have stolen all the glory, but last year Cardiff returned to the scene with a vengeance, totally deserving their title. They were not so successful in the ISL Championships, however, being put out by Sheffield 5-2 in the semi-final.
Cardiff have some of the best players in the league, and it would take far too much space to pick out all their stars. Last seasin's star for Cardiff was their young netminder, Stevie Lyle, and he is now playing for Detroit whalers, hoping to make a shot at the NHL. Naturally, we all wish him good luck. his replacement, Derek Herlofsky, rates as one of the best keepers in the league. In offense, Cardiff have a wealth of riches, including Ian Cooper (one of the best British players in the last 10 years), Doug McEwen (known simply as God in South Wales), Steve Thornton, Ken hodge and Ivan Matulik (together known as "the Black Line"). Indeed, the list just goes on and on. No fair! In defence, Kip Noble is one of the best players I have ever seen, plus they have GB captain, Shannon Hope. Cardiff�s coach is Paul Heavy, in only his second year of the job. He took over after the departure of John Lawless to Manchester, and won the Coach of the Year award for finishing second in the league in the 95/96 season.
