| Since 1988, teams representing wastewater treatment
plants from around the world have come together each October to compete
in the Water Environment Federation's Operations Challenge. In what could
be described as a "wastewater Olympics", the four-member teams
of operators match skills in five events. Judging is based on both speed
and quality of performance.
(1) Collection systems (2) Laboratory (3) Process control (4) Pump maintenance(5) Safety In the safety competition, operators must perform an entry into a simulated confined space, repair a relief valve and store all the equipment back to it's original position. The collection systems event has evolved over the years from identifying collection systems problems from a video, to repairing a section of PVC pipe with water flowing through it, to installing and programming a flow meter. The laboratory competition involves performing a series of lab procedures. In process control, operators must solve several technical problems requiring wastewater mathematics. The pump maintenance event requires making various mechanical and electrical repairs and adjustments to a positive displacement pump. (Centrifugal and progressive cavity pumps were used in the earlier years.) |
