BENNETOS

By Jim Fraser (june 17th 1995)

Mark, Jerry, Ron, Gary, Chi, and I left San Diego on Friday. We picked up 380 scoops of bait (sardines) and headed out. On board were 35 people, including three guests of the skipper. We located our staterooms and stowed our gear. Gary, Chi, and I had one room and Mark, Jerry, and Ron were in another room. The next morning, we set up trolling teams of five persons each. Through the day we only caught 7 tuna in the 15 to 20 lb. range. On Sunday, we went to Bennetos Island and caught limits of yellowtail up to 45 lbs. We also caught a few nice calico bass.

That night, we moved to another location to catch bait, but bad currents made this tough. On Monday, we caught more yellowtail. I used a metal lure and caught 5 nice yellowtail to 20 lbs. A storm south of us caused rough water in our area and the boat bounced around pretty good. I went below and slept for 12 hours. Tuesday morning, we started trolling and caught a few tuna. In the early afternoon, we found a small patty, and everyone on the boat caught 2 or 3 fish. We fished the patty out then it was back to trolling. At about 5pm., we found a kelp patty that was loaded with fish. On Wednesday, we arrived back in San Diego.

I had 20 yellowtail in the 15 to 28 lb. range and 7 tuna in the 20 to 25 lb. range. On this trip, I only used two setups: one was a Shimano T50LRS & 80# test and a Finwick 6455 XX , The other was a Diawa LD50SH & 30# test and a Finwick PC789C. The boat count was 596 yellowtail, 196 tuna, 23 Dorado, and 13 calico bass. Good meals were served throughout the trip and snacks and ice tea were always available. Beer and soda were sold for a dollar each.
