Eagles edge Gazelles in ESD opener

The Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles followed up a season opening loss on Tuesday night with a big ESD victory over the Yankton Gazelles in a low scoring afair, 36-32 in the Arena Friday night. The game was closely contested throughout, with Central holding leads of 2,3 and 1 after each of the quarter breaks. The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on defensively the entire game and looked to be the fresher team down the stretch in the fourth quarter. The Eagles made seven of eight freethrows in the final three minutes and made numerous defensive stops to keep the Gazelles at arms reach, including a play with 12 seconds left with the Eagles holding a two point lead. Senior Jaime Rice deflected a pass which was run down by fellow senior Rebecca Goodman who was fouled after the steal and made both freethrows to ice the game. Tonia Burgard led the Eagles with 11 points. With the win the Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season and travel to Pierre tomorrow night in another ESD contest.
