AUBURN 10, CENTRAL FLORIDA 6

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Gabe Gross threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to
Karsten Bailey with 57 seconds left and Auburn shut down Central
Florida star Daunte Culpepper for a 10-6 victory Saturday.

Culpepper, the nation's leading passer, threw for only 182 yards,
was intercepted four times and failed to throw a TD pass for the
first time in 23 games. He had been intercepted only three times
in his first eight games.

Central Florida (7-2) drove to the Auburn 20-yard line with 1:43
left, but Culpepper fumbled the snap on third-and-5 and Auburn's
Whit Smith recovered to give the Tigers one more chance.

Gross threw three straight incompletions, leaving Auburn (3-6)
with a fourth-and-10 at the 29. But Gross then found Clifton
Robinson for a 13-yard gain and, on the next play, he threw a
short pass to Bailey, who tiptoed down the left sideline for the
touchdown.

The Golden Knights, off to their best start ever, were hoping
Culpepper could guide them to a win over Auburn and a possible
bowl bid. But Auburn, ranked ninth in the nation in total
defense, was able to contain Culpepper most of the day.

Culpepper drove Central Florida down the field four times in the
first half, but the Golden Knights came with only two field goals
by Fred Waczewski.

Auburn couldn't do anything on offense, either. Held to only two
first downs and 56 yards total offense in the first half, the
Tigers looked confused one week after the firing of offensive
coordinator Rodney Allison.

Auburn still had only six first downs and 99 yards through three
quarters, but had closed to 6-3 on Robert Bironas' 44-yard field
goal.
