Thomas Enqvist

THOMAS ENQVIST

Thomas Enqvist is one of the new breed of Swede superstars in the 1990s. He is so far the only Swede who can follow the footsteps of Stefan Edberg or even Bjorn Borg. Analysists say that he's very different from the past Swedish superstars. By being a hard server and baseline player, he can be good at hard surfaces and claycourts but has done poorly in the later. His inconsistent performance is what has prevented him from cracking the top 5 but his is still young still has a very good future ahead of him. He also helped Sweden (1997) reach the finals of the Davis Cup for the third time in the last four years. He dropped his first singles match against Renzo Furlan but won his other singles match. In the finals, he didn't play but was still part of the team. 1997 was a pretty bad year for this young Swede, ending his ranking at 28 with only having won 1 ATP title and losing to Marcelo Rios in the 2nd round of the Australian Open.
In 1998, he started his come back by winning the Marseille Open which he won the previous year and the BMW Open which was on clay. There's more of Enqvist this year. Enqvist ended the 1998 year at number 22 which is six places higher when he ended 1997 at 28. Towards the end of the year, he had to withdraw in some major tournaments due to injuries and when he played, he didn't perform well. He also skipped the finals of the Davis Cup.
