Greetings all!
The reverb was heard in Northern California last night (2/18) as our own Big Wave Dave and his band the Tube Sharks played at No. 1 Broadway in the town of Los Gatos.
No. 1 Broadway is a watering hole that features live music on Tuesday nights. The Bill Cefalo Trio holds forth with jazz those nights and during their set break, allow local musicians to jam. Last night Dave, guitarist Tommy V. and drummer Les Mellow took to the stage and played a set of three covers. In keeping with the venue's mellow mood, the Sharks' first song was the Boss Martians' "Driftwood Beach." The band did a nice job with this song, even throwing in a "Tequila" riff near the end.
The next song, a rawkin' version of "The Wedge," was the Sharks' attention grabber. A look around the room showed that some folks were definitely digging the reverb. A couple of wahinis were even doing the head bobbing, swaying-to-the-music-while-sitting-down thing. No actual dancing though; the crowd saved that for the jazz trio.
The band closed their set with a cool version of "Penetration." Those digging the Sharks' sound had smiles on their faces, possibly realizing that surf can be as cool as jazz (either that, or they were just getting a good buzz from the booze).
Dave told me the band is really coming along and should be ready to make their official debut sometime in the near future. Based on their performance, they will certainly be a welcome addition to the SF surf scene. -- Jim Murphy [email protected]
