June 16, 1998
Dear Mr. Fillio:
Thank you for alerting us of your desire and availability for the upcoming draft scheduled
to be held Wednesday, June 24. After reviewing your biographical information, I have passed
on your name to our scouting department to be filed with our other free agent prospects.
That's right, Chris, you should be aware that you are not considered eligible for the 1998
draft. Since you received your degree in 1990 and were not taken in the 1990 draft, you are
now considered to be a free agent. The good news is that you do not have to wait to speak
to teams about your availability, you are free to explore the open free agent market.
As for our process regarding free agent candidates, we generally like to have members of our
basketball staff see the individual play before offering a player a contract. Although your
statistics in the 1995 Big 6 Washington DC accounting city league are impressive, we can not
sign a player on numbers alone. Maybe you have some film from your 1995 city league season
or at least film from B level intramural league [games] at Notre Dame.
Mr. Fillio, before you make the jump from the world of accounting to cash in on the
"lucrative" (sic) deal awaiting you in the NBA, I ask you this. If your intramural [team]
was unable to win a single game in four years of competition, do you honestly feel you are
ready to fill a productive role on an NBA roster at this time in your career? Maybe your
accounting firm has been unable to surround you with the necessary complimentary pieces
necessary to advance past the first round to this point? My suggestion would be to first
help your firm capture that elusive city league championship. Then, you can step back and
say, "I've now accomplished everything at this level and I'm ready to move on."
Nevertheless, we will keep your name in our files. Please keep us informed of your most
recent basketball accomplishments with relevant film or statistical information and thank
you for your interest in the Milwaukee Bucks.
Yours in basketball,
Bob
