The Official Game of Valpo

Despite the efforts of the Valparaiso University Administration to demolish the final threads of fun & enjoyment at Valpo, one final piece of the good old days still remains. A game that combines a ping-pong ball, some throwing skill, and a few beers still lives on, barely...

Beirut is a Game that captivates the mind and brings out the competitive spirit in everyone who plays. I will use this page to teach Beruit to everyone who wants to learn how to play a great drinking game, while doing it against the wishes of the Valpo Administration. The Dean of Students has had a meeting with me about the page, but yet it still remains alive. You will soon learn there is nothing quite like hearing the splash of a ping pong ball falling into the center of the cup.

1.) To begin with, you need to set up a 8 ft. folding table.

2.) Next you begin to set up the table like the image below illustrates. 10 cheap plastic drinking cups are set up at each end in a triangular form & filled with beer. Two beers at each end (4 total) are used & evenly distributed between the 10 cups (more beer is ok if desired). Two additional cups are also placed on the table filled with water to wash off the ping-pong ball. The table should look like this:

3.) Now your ready to play. Teams normally consist of opposing two player teams (Individual teams are okay, but not as much fun).

The rules of Beruit: After deciding which team goes first, the game begins. Players must stay behind the table, but can lean as much as desired when shooting the ping-pong ball. After the first cup is made, the team that was scored upon must take a cup of beer from the back row & drink it. The first person to shoot on the team is the first person to drink (players exchange turns). Cups are taken on opposite sides of the row beginning in the back (closest to you) & moving forward. The ping-pong ball is taken out of the cup, is washed off in the water, and the next team shoots. The action goes back-&-forth. Any cups throughout the game that are nocked over by a shot or by a player count the same as a made shot & a cup must be drunk accordingly.

The first cup made would result in the table looking like this:

After the 2nd cup is made on a side, the table looks like this:

If no cup is made on a shot, the ball is washed off & play continues:

Once all the cups on the back row have been drunk, then cups from the next row foward are taken:

The next cup made on that side would result in the table looking like this:

Once only two cups remain on one side of the table, the cups can be moved to the back of the table like so (they must be touching):

The team's last cup can be moved anywhere on the table:

(*This rule only applies when BOTH teams have one cup left*) If one team makes the final shot, the other team has a chance to match. If the shot is matched, play goes on with one cup left on both sides. If not the game is over.

The goal of Beruit is to make all the cups before your opponet does. Any remaining cups on the winner's side must be drank by the loosers. The winners remain at the table and play the next opposing team. They remain at the table until defeated. Its not unusual to have more than one table going at once.

Any questions you have about Beruit, be sure to email me & I'll be happy to explain anything you don't understand. I'm also curious how you like the game for those who have attempted it. It is a truly great drinking game!
