Arizona State University Sun Devils

My Dad (a Professor at ASU - check out his page) and I have attended many sporting events at Arizona St. in Tempe, Arizona. From the 1987 and 1997 Rose Bowls in Pasadena, CA, to ASU's upset of #1 Nebraska 19-0, and many other great games, my Dad and I have been there. We have also gone to many basketball and baseball games and enjoyed watching many future stars such as Byron Scott & Barry Bonds. In addition my USS club team Desert Aquatics practices at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, so to say the least Arizona St. has been a big part of my life. I am not attending undergrad school there, but am looking at the possibility of attending grad school at ASU.

The Devils concluded the 1997-98 season by wipping Iowa in the Sun Bowl 17-7. Michael Martin (#29) was the game's MVP and ASU played dominating defense with the help of the Pac-10's Defensive Player of the Year Pat Tillman (#42). Both my brother and Dad were able to attend the game in El Paso, TX.

This year the Devils return the top receiving core in the Pac-10 and maybe in the country. Led by Ricky "The Rocket" Boyer (#24), Lenzie Jackson (#83), Kenny Mitchell (#81), & Creig "C" Spann (#2).

Jake 'The Snake" Plummer led the Devils to the 1997 Rose Bowl in perhaps one of the greatest games of the 90's as Ohio State and ex-ASU coach John "I can't coach to save my life" Cooper beat the Devils in a heartbreaker 20-17. The loss cost ASU the National Championship, but the 1996-97 team will never be forgotton, the same as Plummer's memorable Rose Bowl Touchdown run.

Sun Devil Stadium & Frank Kush Field is the home of ASU and Arizona Cardinal Football. The largest croud to see a game there was 74,963 as the Devils rapped up a trip to the 1997 Rose Bowl with a 35-7 victory over Cal.

ASU Baseball:

Arizona State made it to the Championship Game of the 1998 College World Series led by 2nd Team All-American Willie Bloomquist (#30) before loosing to Southern Cal. Ryan Mills (an expected top 5 pick in this years MLB draft) pitched a 3-hit gem lifting the Devils with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech & into their 18th College Series and 1st under Pat Murphy. The Devils arguably play the toughest schedule in the nation; 34 of their opponents were ranked in the top 25, 12 in the top 5, and 5 of the Six-Pack teams were ranked in the Pre-Season top 25.

ASU Basketball:

Sun Devil Basketball had a sucessful season considering they were picked to finish last in the Pac-10. ASU instead finished 5th and only a end-of-season slide kept them out of the NCAA Tournament. They did make the NIT and finished with a 18-14 record. Jeremy Veal (#21) led the Pac-10 in scoring at 20.5 pts/game, became ASU's all-time leading scorer with 1,963pts, was an All-Pac-10 pick, and a AP Honorable Mention All-American. The Devils hired ex-Ole Miss Coach Rob Evans to take over the coaching job. ASU only had 6 players on scholarship last year, as the starting five played almost the eniter game. An understandable reason for their late season slide. The Devils signed 8 players in the off season and should improve again next year with Mike Batiste (#24) and the NCAA assist leader Ahlon Lewis (#11) returning.

ASU Swimming:

Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, home to the Sun Devils and home to me and my USS club team, Desert Aquatics. This is on of the top swimming facilities in the Nation and has hosted meets from Junior Nationals to 1998 Women Pac-10's. It is a fast pool and perfect place to train and compete in.

Image of francisco.jpg
All-American Francisco Sanchez helped lead the Devils to a 10th place finish at NCAA's. He is in a long line of All-Americans who have swum at ASU. Men's Head Coach Ernie Maglischo retired after the 1997-98 season and ex-Havard Men's Coach Michael Chasson took the job. The Devils hope to improve on 1998's finish and go in a new direction under Chasson.
