Scranton sweeps first-round playoff series
The Scranton Spanish Flies made short work of the Evanston Bees in Round #1 of the
TCBA playoffs as they swept the Central Division Champs four straight. leaving
the Bee fans in a stupor. Game 1: Kevin Appier tossed a 4 hit shutout, leading the visiting Flies to an easy 4-0 win. The game was 1-0 going into the 7th but a 2 run HR by Sheffield, followed by a solo shot by Caminiti made it 4-0 Flies. Appier went the distance recording 7 K's. Game 2: Salmon's 2 out single in the 10th sent Ken Griffey across the plate for the GWH in the 10th ater the Bees had come from behind to tie the game at 5-all in the 6th. Griffey had two Home Runs and Caminiti one as the power-laden Flies continued their onslaught . Todd Hundley's 2 run shot in the 6th had tied the game for Evanston. Trombley got the win in relief while Adams took the loss. Game 3: This was the most embarassing display by an Evanston team in quite awhile as Scranton jumped off to a 10-0 lead in the 1st !!! inning and then just poured it on despite all efforts by manager Fiehl to slow down the attack. The contest (what a laugh) ended up 20-5 Flies on 20 hits & benifited by 4 Bee errors, and 10 (yeah 10) walks. Alomar & Caminiti homered for Scranton. Roger Clemens not only got the easy win but contributed with 3 hits of his own. Alomar, Morris, Caminiti, Salmon & Clemons each had 3 hits. Kevin Tapani was the loser allowing 6 runs on 6 hits before being pulled without recording an out. Game 4: Scranton completed the sweep with a 9-5 victory, scoring in each of the 1st 4 innings, leading 7-1 after 4. The Bees tried to come back but continued to bungle their way around the basepaths & at bat. Hill (W), Ryan (S), Baldwin(L). Caminiti homered, Salmon had 2 roundtrippers and Weiss another as the Scranton offensive machine just kept rolling along. Scranton heads on to the next round while Evanston heads back home to lick the wounds and try to regroup for another season. |
In a hard-fought series (played via Netmeeting) the defending champion Bethesda Bambinos
rallied from a 2 games to 1 deficit to defeat the Portsmouth Pubdwellers 4
games to 2. Paul Molitor emerged as the Bambino hero, driving in 13 runs in
the six games. Old Paul dit it all in smacking 3 hrs, hitting .409 and even
stealing a couple of key bases in the series. A very quick recap of the
