Game 1: Though badly outhit, the Rapids eked out a 2-1 win in the opener on the strength of 2 2/3 no-hit relief by ace Jeff Shaw. Charles Nagy of Rapidan allowed 9 hits (three by Flaherty) but only one runner could score before Nagy was injured in the 7th. Nagy would be out for the series. Scranton starter Kevin Appier took the loss.
Game 2: Scranton tied the series behind the strong pitching of Roger Clemens. Clemens didn't allow a run until the 8th, when he had a 5-0 lead. Offensive support was provided by Ken Caminiti (3 hits) and Ken Griffey (homer and single). Andy Pettitte took the loss for Rapidan; Vinny Castilla had a homer and double for the Rapids.
Game 3: As the series shifted to Scranton, another game was won on a dominant pitching performance, this one by Ismael Valdes of Rapidan, who allowed one run on just two hits in seven innings, leaving Tony Fossas to pick up the save. The Rapids had a 4-1 lead after eight, but Ron Gant made sure of the victory with a grand slam in the ninth. Ken Hill took the loss for the Spanish Flies.
Game 4: The Flies went on the endangered list as Denny Neagle was touched for eight runs in five innings. Eric Young led the way for Rapidan with a single, double, homer and 5 RBI. Steve Trachsel got the win, more for his hitting than his pitching. Trachsel allowed 6 runs in 6 1/3 innings, but chipped in with a 3-run double. Adding injury to insult, Ken Griffey Jr. was hurt and lost to Scranton for the rest of the series.
Game 5: The Spanish Flies let out their frustrations on Valenzuela and the Rapids, letting Kevin Appier coast to a win. Only an unearned run in the 9th separated Appier from a shutout, and by then he had a 14-0 lead! Both Caminiti and Morris doubled and homered for 5 RBI each; Salmon and Flaherty went deep as well.
Game 6: Homers by Ellis Burks and Benny Santiago put the championship plaque in Gary Sibley's hands. Pettitte took the clinching win over Roger Clemens; Sheffield homered for the Flies.
In characteristic form, Gary Sibley modestly accepted the congratulations of the members present, and quietly left to spend some playoff-delayed time with his wife. Gary's well-earned first TCBA Today title may not be his last of this decade.
