TEAMTALK

  Smith delighted with win
Oxford boss Denis Smith was delighted with the 1-0 victory at Wycombe which lifted his team out
  of the relegation zone.
U's triumphed thanks to a 26th minute Joey Beachamp goal, and hung on for maximum points
  despite heavy Wycombe pressure.
On-loan signing Craig Russell made his debut after signing on Thursday, and showed signs of a
  good understanding with Nigel Jemson.
And Smith could not hide his delight at having won his first proper game in charge: "The lads
have worked tremendously hard all round," he said. "I'm very pleased with the attitude and their
  closing down of players."
Smith insisted that the 1-0 win was no mean feat: "It was a cup tie," he said. "We needed not to
  get beat."
There was praise for Paul Tait and Peter Fear in midfield, an area which Oxford have been
lacking in recent weeks. "They were outstanding," said Smith. The Oxford manager was also
pleased with new striker Craig Russell, who barely after 48 hours since joining the club, played
with good understanding and was unlucky not to get a debut goal. "Craig was instrumental in the
  goal," said Smith.
However Smith refused to get carried away after an excellent victory, and still recognises the
dangers of relegation. "I need another 7 wins this season," he said.
"If we can get those, hopefully in the next 7 games, then we can enjoy the rest of it."
