Tranny go through
Oxford went out of the Worthington Cup tonight, with Matt
Murphy missing
a penalty and goals from Yates and Grant gave Tranmere
a 2-0 win.
A fairly quiet first half saw both sides create very little
in the opening
period until first half injury time when Oxford were awarded
a penalty
following a challenge on Joey Beauchamp.
Tranmere had created the better half chances up until
that point with Scott
Taylor seeing his early powerful drive come back off the
upright. Lee
Jones had the only other clear cut chance of the half
for Tranmere which
he wasted.
However, Oxford had the best chance to go in front two
minutes into first
half stoppage time and Beauchamp went down as he was pressured
by
Steve Yates but Joe Murphy did well to get down low to
his right to save
Matt Murphy's spot kick.
Tranmere started the second half brightly and it didn't
take long before
they were in front.
Twelve minutes into the second period Alan Mahon saw his
shot blocked
but it broke to Steve Yates, who despite scuffing his
shot watched the ball
manage to dribble past Andre Arendse.
Rovers then made it two just six minutes later as Tony
Grant - on loan from
Everton but with permission to play - took a first time
shot from 25 yards
out, which Arendse really should've held but having taken
the sting out of
the effort he rather embarrassingly let it slip into the
back of the net
through his legs!
Tranmere held on fairly comfortably, especially after
Paul Tait had been
dismissed with 9 minutes remaining, to secure a place
in the fourth round
and a tie with Barnsley.
