Save Oxford United  ->  Matches  ->  2 November 1999
Colchester United (Home)

RESULT 1 - 1 - against the bottom side in the league this felt more like defeat.
TEAM
Arendse
Folland, Watson, Robinson, Whelan, Powell
Fear, Murphy, Beauchamp
Lilley, Lambert
SUBS Abbey (for Lilley, 78)
Cook (for Lambert, 78)
Lundin, McGowan, Weatherstone (not used)
GOALS 1-0 LAMBERT (17 secs) - Amazing start. Lambert controlled the ball, lifted it over the defender and shot into the corner.
1-1 McGAVIN (33) - From a poorly defended corner, with Arendse rooted to his line, and McGavin pounced in the box.
[0-0 MURPHY penalty hit bar (75) ]
PERFORMANCE An excellent start, we played well until Col U equalised. Then it degenerated into a dire game between two inept teams.
MAN OF MATCH Jamie LAMBERT - Played really excellently for the first 25 minutes.
Rob FOLLAND - Again impressed at wing-back.
BOOKINGS None
ATTENDANCE 4, 444 - Looks good numerically (all fours), but our crowds are generally getting lower.
REFEREE P Rejer (Tipton) - Fairly terrible. Whistle happy - stopped the game at every opportunity. One awful assistant too.

TEAMTALK

Early strike not enough
Oxford's goal on 17 seconds from Jamie Lambert wasn't enough as they were held 1-1 by bottom club Colchester United at the Manor Ground.
The dream start came about thanks largely to Colchester's defence, who hesitated when trying to deal with a long kick down field by Andre Arendse and Lambert took full advantage by chesting down the ball before firing a left foot drive past Colchester 'keeper Michael Brown.
However Colchester got back on level terms after 33 minutes, against the run of play, after Oxford had dominated. A Karl Duguid corner was flicked on before being headed in by Fabrice Richard for his first goal for the club, although there was some confusion over who did get the final touch as Steve McGavin may have a case to claim it for himself.
Despite some good pressure from Oxford in the second period they couldn't break down Colchester's dogged defence and they had to make do with a point which puts them on 12 points in a lowly 20th position.
