Lewis gains another point
Oxford pulled further away from the bottom of Division Two thanks to
Jamie Lambert's goal in the 1-1 draw against Bury at the Manor Ground.
Since the departure of Malcolm Shotton and with the uncertainty in
the camp the team seem to have responded well and looked booked for mid-table
at least, if they can continue this good form.
As far as this game was concerned the U's got off to the best possible
start forcing the pace early on and grabbing a great goal to give the team
a confidence boost. Another early strike from Jamie Lambert, (the man who
registered in just seven seconds against Colchester,) got the ball rolling
in this game, although he had to wait until the tenth minute this evening.
A Joey Beauchamp corner was flicked on at the near post and although
Lambert had his back to goal his quick footwork and sharp finish proved
too much for the visitors' defence.
Mickey Lewis' side continued to call the tune throughout the remainder
of the first half. Derek Lilley burst through only to fire wide and Lambert's
long range effort was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Kenny, whilst Bury
were denied even a single sight of goal.
In truth the visiting side had little to shout about after 90 minutes
of slog and although they worked hard United keeper Paul Lundin may as
well have sat in the stand for most of the game.
In truth, of the two teams on the park it was the ever impressive United
who looked likelier to get a second goal as the game progressed, however
this was not scripted..
The U's indeed went close when Phil Whelan swang in a cross that was
taken off the toe of Derek Lilley, the former Leeds United striker, with
the goal at his mercy.
Bury were not helped by the injury to Paul Reid after just 20 minutes
with Steve Redmond put in as a replacement.
Oxford defended well and never really looked like relinquishing three
points while for Bury it simply seemed like it would be a bad day at the
office, until with ten minutes left and against the run of play Ian Lawson
found himself in the clear and produced a striker of great quality to earn
his side a point.
The goal was all the more surprisingngiven that the Shakers had been
reduced to ten men by then after the sending off of Andy Preece.
